Dear Friend,

Before we jump into the positive news stories of the week, I want to take a moment to honor two constituents who recently turned 100. Ms. Betty Jasinski of Bay County celebrated her 100th birthday last Wednesday, and Mr. Bill Bruce celebrated his 100th birthday last Saturday. Reaching 100 years of age is an amazing feat, and I’m grateful for the positive impact both outstanding individuals have made in our district. Happy belated birthday, Ms. Jasinski and Mr. Bruce! God bless you!

Here are a few more positive news stories to get you through your week --

Sports fans locally and nationally are praising Brittany Bowe for giving Erin Jackson, a U.S. speedskating teammate and fellow Ocala resident, a chance to compete in the Winter Olympics. Jackson slipped during the U.S. Olympic long-track speedskating trials and was not going to make the team. Bowe gave up her spot in the 500-meter event to Jackson. Bowe still will race in the 1,000- and 1,500-meter competitions. I’m looking forward to seeing both compete. Read more here.

18-year-old Girl Scout Ambassador Caitlin Holmes said her family has always tried to give back to the community and give meals to those in need. So, when it came time for Holmes to do her senior project for Girl Scouts, she instantly knew what she wanted to do. Holmes built a small, accessible food pantry filled with nonperishable food items and toiletries to help the homeless and food insecure in downtown Panama City. Read more here.

The 43rd annual Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame banquet will honor Marianna native Dr. Wayne Smith for his "invaluable contributions to Florida agriculture,” according to a press release from the Ag Hall of Fame Foundation. Smith was named to the Hall of Fame for 2021, but he will be honored along with the 2022 inductees at the upcoming ceremony, as last year’s banquet was canceled due to COVID-19. Congratulations, Dr. Smith! Read more here.
