This Week in the Office of Senator Marco Rubio 

On Friday, I joined Senator Susan Collins and colleagues in releasing statements after President Joe Biden signed our Helping American Victims Afflicted by Neurological Attacks (HAVANA) Act (S. 1828) into law. The new law authorizes financial support and ensures medical care for American public servants who have suffered brain injuries from probable directed energy attacks. Read more here

  

On Wednesday, I joined Fox News Primetime to discuss the politicization of the U.S. Department of Justice and my letter urging President Biden to fire Vice President Kamala Harris as ‘Border Czar.’ Watch the full interview here

  

On Thursday, I sent a letter to Federal Bureau of Prisons Director Michael Carjaval urging the agency to conduct further investigations into allegations of sexual assault at Federal Correctional Institution Coleman, which is located in Sumter County, Florida. Read more here.

  

On Thursday, I was joined by Senate colleagues in sending a letter to President Biden requesting that he replace Vice President Kamala Harris with a new Border Czar in light of her failure to stem the flow of illegal migrants to the United States and work with our neighbors to secure the border. On Thursday, I released a statement following recent research that shows President Biden’s new government child allowance “would lead 1.5 million workers (constituting 2.6 percent of all working parents) to exit the labor force.” According to the research, given the decline in workforce participation, the President’s policy would “fail to reduce deep child poverty at all.” Read more here

  

On Wednesday, I led members of the Florida congressional delegation in sending a letter to President Biden urging the administration to protect Florida’s seasonal fruit and vegetable growers from unfair trade competition. Read more here.

  

On Wednesday, I sent a letter to President Biden following his remarks to the press that he received a commitment from Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping that both countries would “abide by the Taiwan agreement” and asking for him to clarify his comments. Read more here.

  

On Wednesday, I sent a letter to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Gary Gensler and Commissioner Allison Herren Lee regarding the impact of the SEC’s agenda on so-called environmental, social, and governance (ESG) metrics, and whether those same standards would apply to companies based or operating in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). I highlighted the potential hypocrisy of requiring disclosures related to ESG without also requiring disclosure of companies’ human rights practices in China. Read more here.

  

On Tuesday, Senators Gary Peters (D-MI), Todd Young (R-IN), and I applauded the Senate passage of our bipartisan legislation to revamp the Manufacturing.gov website, which would serve as a one-stop hub to connect manufacturers with federal manufacturing programs and resources. Read more here.

  

On Monday, U.S. Senators Mark Warner (D-VA), Jim Risch (R-ID), Bob Menendez (D-NJ), and I sent a letter to President Biden urging him to take immediate action to increase staffing at the U.S. embassy in Moscow and, if the Russian Government does not a cooperate, to expel 300 Russian diplomats. On Monday, I issued a statement after the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a final rule regarding the Title X federal family planning program that will allow taxpayer dollars to go to Planned Parenthood. Read more here.

  

On Monday, I issued a statement after more than 145 Chinese warplanes flew into or near Taiwan’s air defense identification zone last weekend. Read more here

  

On Thursday, I joined Senators Bill Hagerty (R-TN), Ron Johnson (R-WI), Ted Cruz (R-TX), John Barrasso (R-WY), and Todd Young (R-IN) in sending a letter to Senators Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Jim Risch (R-ID), Chairman and Ranking Member, respectively, of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, requesting for the committee to hold classified briefings as well as a full committee hearing with officials from the Biden Administration about U.S. strategy toward the Chinese Communist Party and U.S. policy regarding Taiwan. Last Thursday, I joined Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) and a bipartisan group of 13 Senate colleagues in urging U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra to establish an ambitious national goal to prevent Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, and to develop a plan to achieve this goal. Legislation Introduced

  • On Wednesday,  I joined Senator Rick Scott in introducing legislation to designate the United States Courthouse and Federal Building located at 111 North Adams Street in Tallahassee, Florida, as the “Joseph Woodrow Hatchett United States Courthouse and Federal Building.” Read more here
  • On Thursday, I introduced the Flood Risk Transparency for Homebuyers Act to require the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide a disclosure notice to potential homebuyers if the HUD listed properties are located in a flood zone and are considered a Repetitive Loss property according to the National Flood Insurance Program.   • On Thursday, Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS) and I introduced the Reusing Equipment for Environmental Fortification (REEF) Act. The REEF Act encourages the Navy to prioritize the repurposing of retired vessels into artificial reefs to reinforce marine environments and create both recreational and economic opportunities.
