This Week in the Office of Senator Marco Rubio

On Thursday, as Vice Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, I sent a letter to President Joe Biden demanding answers as to how his administration plans to rebuild lost intelligence and counterterrorism capabilities in Afghanistan and the tribal regions of Pakistan. Senators Roy Blunt (R-MO) and Ben Sasse (R-NE), both members of the Intelligence Committee, also signed the letter. Read more here.

  

Last Friday, Senators Jim Risch (R-ID), Susan Collins (R-ME), Mike Crapo (R-ID), and I sent a letter to President Joe Biden urging him to take the necessary steps to ensure that all American citizens, allies, and partners wishing to leave Afghanistan are safely evacuated. Read more here

  

On Tuesday, I sent a letter to U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas demanding a full accounting of steps taken to ensure that terrorists that have been released by the Taliban are not able to cross into the United States from our southern border with Mexico. On Wednesday, I visited the C-44 Project, which is located on approximately 12,000 acres of land in Martin County as part of the Indian River Lagoon South Project Implementation, under the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan. I toured the C-44 Reservoir and Stormwater Treatment Area and met with members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, South Florida Water Management and local environmental leaders to discuss ongoing Everglades restoration projects. On Wednesday, as Vice Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, I urged the Biden Administration to immediately declassify the inconclusive intelligence community report on the origins of COVID-19. I also called on Congress to pass my COVID Act of 2021 , which would authorize sanctions and other restrictions if the CCP fails to allow for a credible and comprehensive investigation into the origins of COVID-19 at laboratories in Wuhan that studied coronaviruses. On Tuesday, I published an op-ed in the The Washington Times discussing the need for Congress to rein in the current administrative state, which allows unelected bureaucrats to wield outsized power over American policymaking.  Read the full article here

  

On Thursday, I led bipartisan members of the Florida Congressional delegation in a letter to the National Archives and Records Administration to express concern over the growing backlog of constituents’ requests for military records at the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) in St. Louis, Missouri. We urged the Administration to fully reopen their facility so that veterans can access the records they need. Read more here.

  

On Thursday, as Vice Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, I released a statement demanding answers from the Biden Administration about reports that it approved license applications for Huawei to buy semiconductors for its automotive parts business. On Thursday, I sent a letter to Isabella Guzman, Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), requesting clarification on how agent fees should be treated for Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans of less than $50,000. Read more here

  

On Thursday, Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and I, along with 16 Senate colleagues, sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken urging the Biden Administration to recognize that the Burmese military attacks on the Rohingya people constitute genocide and crimes against humanity. On Wednesday, I joined Nio Encendio on Máxima 92.5 Tampa Bay to discuss Afghanistan, COVID-19 vaccines, and my amendment to provide uncensored Internet access to Cuba, which was unanimously passed by the Senate. Read more here.
