A Few among Millions
Few men among millions recognize a threat. They see threw the lies and the deceptions. They see the veil of deceit. Sometimes it takes decades - and sometimes only a few years. Is it foresight - premonition?
Evil forces exist in this world and most times those forces are hidden. They are hidden either through evil deeds, words, and/or actions. These forces always have an agenda. This agenda will bring about something bad. And to do so, it takes lies, deception and daily propaganda; All in the hope of deceiving the people in order to achieve their agenda.
In 1934, US journalist William I. Shirer witnessed an appearance at the annual rally in Nuremberg. “Like a Roman emperor, Hitler rode into this medieval town at sundown today past solid phalanxes of wildly cheering Nazis who packed the narrow streets.” Shortly afterwards, Shirer found himself in the crowd that screamed, “We want our Fuhrer!”
Filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl produced “Triumph of the Will”, an unreserved, 90-minute tribute to Adolf Hitler and Nazism’s greatness. The film showed Hitler arriving from the clouds, descending to earth in his plane. It built up an almost religious narrative that culminated with thousands of people shouting “Sieg Heil” to welcome their leader. Over 20 million Germans went to the cinema to be seduced by the film. Leni helped build the image of Hitler as a superhuman.
The Fuhrer was deluged by German fan mail. Barbers wanted to cut his hair. One woman wrote, “…such a great love, the love of my leader, my teacher, that I sometimes would like to die, while I have your picture in front of me…”
During the late 1920’s the Party suffered a few election loses in trying to gain power within Germany. Rebuilding and reorganizing the Party helped to make it strong enough to seize power once the times were more favorable. Hitler knew how to play the field. He knew he could not win by force so he played the “politician”. He was gaining the people’s trust and opportunities were presented – 1929.
Not a shot was fired. They waited to surrender and Austria ceased to exist. The annexation of Austria proved to be a useful experience for Hitler. He learned to manipulate skeptical Western powers and made tactical agreements with his opponents in pursuit of his goal – the German Reich.
Fast forward through much of the war itself because I believe most of us know all about WWII and all that Hitler and the Nazis did.
The most “famous” attempt was made by Georg Elser. It took him over a year to plan and make ready the attempt to assassinate Hitler. By the way, Elser was a Communist. He was the lone assassin. Hitler honored the Beer Hall Putsch every year at the Hall. The Hall was the location with a bomb planted in the column just behind the lectern. Elser was a cabinet maker who knew nothing about bombs but he was smart, creative, and inventive. He called it his “infernal machine” and it was considered a technical marvel.
He had to carve out a section of the column so his bomb would fit in the column undetected. Being a perfectionist, the location could not be detected because it was hidden so well. The bomb used a clock timer, which was set for 21:20 hours on the 8th November 1939. Hitler would be speaking at this time. As a result, Hitler was earlier than normal on this night. So his speech ended 13 minutes ahead of schedule. Exactly 13 minutes after Hitler left the hall – Elser’s bomb exploded with a muffled Boom.
Elser was captured and tortured. The Gestapo believed that Elser did not act alone, but he did. Elser’s final days were at Dachau where the order was given to execute him. On the night of 10th April, 1945 he was taken to the camp’s crematorium, killed with a gunshot, and his body immediately burned. He was just 13 minutes away from changing the course of history.
To Germany Elser was a hero – a communist – but a hero never the less. In 2011, Berlin finally put up a memorial to Elser. The 17 meter sculpture stands in Wilhelmstrasse, near the Fuhrer’s bunker.
So now this begs the question: Why and or how did Hitler survive all 42 attempts on his life? Hitler was either too early to a meeting or too late or never showed up or had to reschedule the meeting. Here is a man that was destined to carry out his evil will on people. He was destined to order millions of Jews, millions of civilians, and others to their death. For some ungodly reason his life and all he did was meant to be a part of history. Why did he live to see all this destruction in only 12 years? Fate?
