This Week in the Office of Senator Marco Rubio 

On Sunday, Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) and I sent a letter to President Joe Biden requesting that he promptly approve Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ request for a pre-landfall emergency declaration in expectation of Tropical Storm Elsa. The request was ultimately approved. Read more here.

  

On Wednesday, I issued a statement following the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse. Read more here.

  

On Wednesday, I released a statement calling on President Joe Biden to take action to halt continued ransomware attacks originating from Russia. Read more here.

  

On Tuesday, members of my staff attended a burial service for Corporal Herman Phy, a Purple Heart recipient who lost his life at 18 years old while fighting in the Korean War. Corporal Phy, who was previously classified as Missing in Action (MIA), was returned to his final resting place at the Sarasota National Cemetery on the 68th anniversary of his passing at the Battle of Pork Chop Hill in 1953. My staff continues to work diligently to serve our Korean War veterans, and I was proud to honor the sacrifice of this courageous patriot. 

  

On Tuesday, I joined Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL), Ben Cardin (D-MD), Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Mark Warner (D-VA), and Ted Cruz (R-TX) in urging the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to complete its investigation of Cuban human rights advocate Oswaldo Payá, who died nearly nine years ago, without further delay. On Wednesday, Senators Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Tim Kaine (D-VA), and I led 10 Senators in a bipartisan letter to President Joe Biden in support of the U.S.-Colombia relationship. We underscored Colombia’s significance as one of the United States’ most important strategic partners in the Western Hemisphere and also highlighted the importance of our nation’s continued support for Colombia’s efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. On Thursday, Senators Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Rick Scott (R-FL), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), and I sent a letter to Senate Committee on Finance Chairman Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Ranking Member Mike Crapo (R-ID) urging them to act quickly to implement a long-term, sustainable solution for Puerto Rico’s Medicaid program. Without congressional action, Puerto Rico’s Medicaid program will lose 90 percent of its federal funding on September 30, 2021. Read more here

  

Last Thursday, I joined Senators Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Tom Cotton (R-AR), Ted Cruz (R-TX), and Todd Young (R-IN) in pressing the U.S. Department of Justice for information about why an Al Jazeera subsidiary and other affiliates, including its new media platform, “Rightly,”  have not yet registered as foreign agents under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), despite reported demands from the department to do so. Last Wednesday, I joined Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and colleagues in urging the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to help more veterans and military families purchase homes by providing additional flexibilities under the VA Home Loan Guaranty Program, as well as additional education and outreach to real estate agents, mortgage lenders, and veterans about the VA Home Loan process. Legislation Introduced

  • I  joined Senators Rick Scott (R-FL), Tom Cotton (R-AR), and Roger Marshall (R-KS) in introducing the Protect American Power Infrastructure Act to prohibit the use of bulk-power equipment that is produced by entities under the control or influence a foreign adversary in our nation’s defense-critical electric infrastructure.
