UP FIRST 03/08/2021

First look:

  • The Senate barely passed Biden's big bill -- what was cut out of it?
  • Public schools still limited as border detention camps open 100%
  • Vaccinated? When can you drop the mask and congregate again?
  • Two more Cuomo accusers come forward, NY Gov says he's staying

Biden's $1.9T bill passes -- Here's what was changed to make it happen

HeadlineHere Are Some Of The Big Changes In The Senate-Passed Stimulus Bill

The First take: This weekend, the Senate pulled a rare "all-nighter" to push through its version of the nearly two trillion dollar "American Rescue Plan." The GOP managed to block the Dems $15 minimum wage push. But little else was cut from a bill GOP Senator John Barasso calls a "liberal wish list." The House is preparing to reconcile with the Senate and move towards a vote this week. There is apparently little the GOP can do to stop this bill from going to President Biden's desk for his signature. We sure wish more Republicans would be like Ted Cruz and point out the senseless and wasteful parts of the bill, like $1,400 checks for felons and illegals. (See the bonus story below.)

Biden OKs child migrant detention centers to open at 100% capacity

HeadlineBiden Admin Allows Child Migrant Detention Centers To Open At 100% Capacity, Eyes Giving Them New Name: Reports

The First take: Citing the demand due to a rush of unaccompanied children at our border, the Biden Administration has just approved detention facilities along the southern border can operate at 100% of their intended capacity. 100% of capacity. Curiously, many states still mandate restaurants, gyms, stores schools and sporting events remain closed or at severely restricted capacity. Meanwhile Mexico, a country considered to be a COVID-19 hot spot, is sending thousands of undocumented and untested people to our border and we're letting them in. What could possibly go wrong? (Also, what happened to the "children in cages" mantra?)

Vaccinated? When can you be free of that mask? Fauci says, "Stay tuned"

HeadlineFauci: CDC to release guidelines for vaccinated people 'imminently'

The First take: It was just a year ago Dr. Anthony Fauci told us it was selfish for Americans to be wearing masks in public. Not long after that, we learned it was just the opposite -- masks were mandated in many places and in some cases TWO masks were to be worn. With tens of millions being vaccinated, we want to know when we can be free of masks and get back to "normal." The answer? Fauci vows, “It is not going to be this way indefinitely.” We're not holding our breath, Doc.

Two more Cuomo accusers come forward — Gov says he's not leaving

HeadlineTop New York Lawmakers Call On Cuomo To Step Down After He Dismissed Resignation Calls As ‘Anti-Democratic’

The First take: We just checked the definition of "tone deaf," and while NY Governor Andrew Cuomo's picture is not yet next to the expression, it could happen soon. Cuomo is being investigated by the FBI for the nursing home scandal and at least five women have charged the governor with sexual harassment. But he says he's not going anywhere. Like we said, tone deaf.
