Sen. Manchin signals he would vote "No" on party line COVID relief bill

Headline‘They Can’t Blow It Down The Line’: Manchin Signals He’d Vote ‘No’ On Party Line COVID-19 Deal

What's Up: Speaking with Fox News' Brett Baier, Senator Joe Manchin announced he would vote "no" on a COVID-19 relief bill that did not include any input from the 50 Republican senators in the chamber.

Quote: "My friends on the other side are going to have input. And, we are going to do something that we agree on. I’m not going to do it just down the lines, just a party line vote. It has to make sense." — Manchin

The First take: We welcome Mr. Manchin's fairness on the topic and also wish we were privy to any backroom negotiations underway with leadership on both sides. A single senator from one of the smaller states in our union is currently wielding a whole lot of political power. We're interested to see how he uses it.

If this bill passes, kiss your Second Amendment rights goodbye

HeadlineH.R. 127: A New Bill In Congress Would Literally End Your 2nd Amendment Rights Permanently

What's Up: Exactly one month ago, H.R. 127 was introduced with little or no fanfare. Many supporters of the Second Amendment believe the passing of this bill (or another one like it) would signal the end of Americans' right to "keep and bear arms."

Quote: "HR 127 establishes a federal firearms registration system that will be accessible by federal, state, and local governments, including the military – even the GENERAL PUBLIC! The system will track the make, model, and serial number of all firearms, their owners, the dates they were acquired, and where they are being stored." — ZeroHedge.com

The First take: The Left often tells us, "nobody is going to take away the Second Amendment." Well, we beg to differ. In early January, less than a week after this bill was presented, President Biden promised to "defeat the NRA." Democrats spent hundreds of millions to elect anti-Second Amendment candidates and push anti-gun legislation. And now, with complete control of Congress and the White House, we're concerned, very concerned.

Press Secretary Psaki gets (P)snarky with media, faces backlash

HeadlineJen Psaki Faces Backlash For ‘Disgraceful’ Remark Appearing To Mock Branch Of U.S. Military

What's Up: Tuesday's press briefing sparked a bit of controversy as Press Secretary Jen Psaki seemed to mock and diminish the importance of a branch of the US military when asked about President Biden's plans for Space Force. Some in the media and Congress objected to the flippant response Psaki delivered.

Quote: "'It’s concerning to see the Biden administration’s press secretary blatantly diminish an entire branch of our military as the punchline of a joke, which I’m sure China would find funny,' Rogers said. 'The Space Force was passed with near unanimous support in Congress, the same type of ‘unity’ President Biden is supposedly working towards. Jen Psaki needs to immediately apologize to the men and women of the Space Force for this disgraceful comment.'" — DailyWire.com

The First take: While we "get it," we also acknowledge one of the things a Press Secretary has to do is keep the press on their toes as members of the media try to do the same with the administration. However, we believe Secretary Psaki "stepped in it" here and should apologize. And, while we're on the subject of press conferences, when is President Biden going to take questions from reporters the way Donald Trump did? Yeah, yeah, we know... not anytime soon.

Just a single dose of AstraZeneca vaccine shows strong results

HeadlineSingle dose of AstraZeneca vaccine drastically cuts COVID-19 transmission: UK study

What's Up: Britain's Health Secretary shared positive news about the AstraZeneca vaccine on Tuesday. While the protocols for this vaccine have suggested two injections delivered a month apart would be required for immunity, a single dose has demonstrated strong immunity over a 12 week period.

Quote: "'That reduction in transmission, as well as the fact there is no hospitalizations, the combination of that is very good news. And it categorically supports the strategy we’ve been taking on having a 12-week gap between the doses,' Hancock told Sky News on Wednesday." — NYPost.com

The First take: Finally some good news. As many countries are struggling with the winter surge in COVID-19 cases while trying to get as many shots into the arms of people, this news could prove pivotal in the war on the pandemic. By extending the time before a second shot is needed, many more people could be vaccinated and the desired "herd immunity" might arrive months ahead of original projections. We'll keep following the science.
