#ShabbatShalom - Welcome to Shushan Purim and to Parasha Tetzaveh (You Shall Command), this week’s Torah Portion. Please read with us these portions of God’s word that will be heard in synagogues around the world during this week’s Shabbat (Saturday) service. We know you will be blessed!
Purim Victory Celebrated in Shushan (356 BCE)
The battles fought between the Jews and their enemies, which took place on Adar 13 throughout the Persian empire continued for two days -- Adar 13 and 14 -- in the capital city of Shushan, where there were a greater number of Jew haters. Thus the victory celebrations in Shushan were held on the 15th of Adar, and the observance of the festival of Purim was instituted for that day in Shushan and all walled cities.
In last week’s Parsha Terumah, God instructed Moses and the Israelites to construct a Tabernacle (Mishkan) in the wilderness. This week, God commands them to bring pure olive oil for the lamp, and to create holy garments for the priests (cohanim). In this Parasha, sacred garments are to be made for the priests so they can serve God. One of them is the breastplate of judgment (Choshen Hamishpat). The breastplate is associated with the Urim and Thummim, and they are used for divining the will of the Lord. The priestly breastplate was made of embroidered linen sized and shaped into a square cubit. It contained four rows, each with three precious gems embedded within the plate and surrounded with gold.

Esther had an inner beauty and strength which enabled her to act in a way which changed the world. We too can take on the character of Esther, find the hidden strength to take action, and make a difference—even when the situation seems hopeless and all appears lost.

In this week’s portion Tetzaveh,
God gives Moses intricate details about the clothing and vestments for the Priests and the High Priest, who was the spiritual leader of the Jewish people. The style, the material, and the colors are all specified. Their appearance reflected dignity and character. After all, character is leadership. Clothing has the ability to emphasize your character. Whether you are a man or woman, your clothing should show self-respect. When you dress modestly and with dignity, it gives your personality and character the opportunity to shine forth. Refraining from dressing in a way that draws undue attention to your body allows the attention to be drawn to your character instead. Let your appearance reflect dignity and character. When character exists, you feel safe and right. So when you get dressed today, think about how you appear—to God, to yourself, and to others.

I use olive oil in most everything. The diversity of flavors – from herbal to earthy can bring out the best of breads, salads, vegetables, fish, poultry and even steaks. Olive oil is a precious part of our Biblical tradition and our culinary heritage. Let's celebrate Shabbat with olive oil.
