FLORIDA - SENATOR RICK SCOTT'S WEEK IN REVIEW 09/04/2020

Image
This week, Senator Rick Scott signed Heritage Action’s Police Pledge to show his unwavering support for America’s law enforcement. As Governor, and now as U.S. Senator, he will always do everything he can to support our brave men and women in uniform.

Senator Scott also applauded the Trump Administration’s progress on the Tamiami Trail Next Steps Project. This next phase of the Tamiami Trail builds on Senator Scott’s efforts as Governor to complete this project, which is critical to the health of Florida’s Everglades, and urging for federal funding last year.

Senator Rick Scott signed Heritage Action’s Police Pledge to show his unwavering support for America’s law enforcement.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Law enforcement officers across America risk their lives every day to keep people safe. As Governor, and now as Senator, I will always do everything I can to support our brave men and women in uniform. Stripping our law enforcement of the resources necessary to protect our communities would do nothing to keep Americans safe. In fact, this would endanger our communities more. I won’t let the radical Left use the crimes of a few bad actors to demonize good, hard-working police officers. We must stand up for those fighting every day for our safety." Read more HERE.
Senator Rick Scott sent a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer urging the Administration to consider negotiating a free trade agreement with Taiwan, a nation that shares the United States’ vision of economic success and democracy. Read more, including the letter, HERE.
Senator Rick Scott applauded the Trump Administration’s move to advance the Tamiami Trail Next Steps Project. This next phase of the Tamiami Trail builds on Senator Scott’s efforts as Governor to complete this project, which is critical to the health of Florida’s Everglades, and urging for federal funding last year.

Senator Rick Scott said, “I applaud the Trump Administration’s continued commitment to our environment with progress on this critical project. This builds on my efforts as Governor to fund the Tamiami Trail Modification Next Step Phase I and champion significant funding for the Everglades, and my urging of federal funding for Phase II as Senator. I look forward to continuing this strong federal-state partnership to finish the Tamiami Trail and help preserve Florida’s historic Everglades National Park for generations to come." Read more HERE
Senator Rick Scott sent a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urging the Department of State to maintain the Level 4 Do Not Travel Advisory to Communist China beyond the pandemic, given the ongoing human rights abuses and critical threat to the safety of Americans. Senator Rick Scott wrote an op-ed for the Miami Herald on his opposition to the current version of the “Fairness for High Skilled Immigrants Act,” which could hurt Florida’s workers and economic success.

In the op-edSenator Rick Scott wrote, “I am proud to represent Florida, a state that celebrates diversity. We’re a state that welcomes immigrants from around the world, and has succeeded because of their many contributions. As governor and now as a member of the U.S. Senate, it is my job to protect the diversity that we hold dear. We also have to reform our long-broken immigration system and we have to secure our border. Reforms must be fair and make sense for the American people and economy, as well as for those around the world hoping to share in the American dream.

While I appreciate my colleagues’ work on the “Fairness for High Skilled Immigrants Act” (S.386), it is a piece-meal attempt to address the immigration crisis. The bill aims to fix the employment-based (EB) visa backlog by eliminating the numerical per-country caps. However, it would do so at the expense of American workers, highly skilled immigrants, workers from Latin America and Europe, as well as Florida’s most important industries.
… I’ve heard from many constituents about how this bill would impact people in Florida, especially those who came to Florida from Latin America. Florida’s booming economy and location as the gateway to Latin America has allowed us to become a global hub for trade and business. We must look at the sectors that eliminating this cap would unjustly benefit, particularly the tech industry, and what sectors it would hurt.

… The current iteration of S.386 is not the answer, but I’m committed to working with my colleagues on a solution that makes sense for Florida and allows more people to participate. If we don’t speak up now, the long-term effects of this quick fix could damage Florida’s economy and the diversity that we’ve worked so hard to protect."
