NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICT

Dear friend,
Last week, many of us took the opportunity to celebrate Independence Day with family and friends despite COVID-19. However, the celebration shouldn’t stop there. We are a one-of-a-kind nation determined to make the best of the toughest conditions. That deserves to be recognized. Here are a few stories to help you appreciate the perseverance of this nation and our district.

Apalachicola held a scaled-down version of its 16th annual Red, White, and Blue Parade last Friday, led by Grand Marshall Air Force Sgt. William Key. On Saturday, residents of Franklin County continued the celebration with an unofficial parade on St. George Island that morning and enjoyed not one, but TWO fireworks shows that evening. This may not have been the Independence Day the area originally planned, but the community was determined to make the best of it.  And don’t worry, the Franklin County Health Department made sure there were plenty of masks for everyone. You can read the full article here.

Good news for small businesses! Almost 550 local Tallahassee businesses have received millions in loans from the federal Paycheck Protection Program. Since the federal government began supporting these businesses in April, many have utilized these funds to remain afloat amidst the Coronavirus pandemic. You can read the full article here.

In Lake City, Corporal Shane Foote of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office took a moment to spread kindness and make a new friend. Unaware that the act was being documented, the officer sat down with a homeless man outside of a Chick-Fil-A to enjoy an impromptu picnic. The moment went viral after a passerby took a moment to share this good deed. Outstanding leadership! Thank you, Corporal Foote, for your selflessness and service. You can read the full article here.
