This Week in the Office of Senator Marco Rubio
This week, the Senate began hearing the opening arguments in President Trump’s impeachment trial. On Tuesday, we adopted the procedural rules for the trial, which are virtually identical to the rules used during the impeachment trial of former President Clinton.
On Wednesday, the House Impeachment Managers began presenting their case. Over the course of eight hours, they offered a detailed timeline of events underpinning their case. Senators listened to recorded testimony from witnesses given during the House impeachment inquiry which was supplemented by transcripts and evidence gathered from the press and social media.
On Thursday, House Impeachment Managers spent over nine hours presenting evidence and recorded testimony from witnesses in support of abuse of power charges against President Trump.
On Friday, House impeachment managers will conclude their presentation and the President’s lawyers will begin their defense Saturday morning.
On Wednesday, Senators Ron Johnson (R-WI), Rick Scott (R-FL), and I sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Acting Secretary Chad Wolf to better understand the process through which the shooter in the December 2019 Pensacola shooting, Ahmed Mohammed al-Shamrani, received an A-2 visa to participate in military training in the United States. On Wednesday, I was joined by Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) and U.S. Representative Ted Deutch (D-FL), in sending a letter to President Trump urging the administration to continue to prioritize the release of all American citizens who are currently being held hostage by the Iranian regime. Specifically, the letter highlights the case of Florida constituent, Bob Levinson, the longest-held hostage in U.S. history. Read more here.
Last Saturday, I published an op-ed in the Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald discussing last week’s Senate approval of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which includes provisions that benefit Florida small-businesses and manufacturers and is “a substantial victory for American workers.” Read the full article here.
On Thursday, I joined Senators Rick Scott (R-FL) and Tom Cotton (R-AR) in sending a letter to American Hospital Association President Richard Pollack requesting information on the steps they have taken to safeguard U.S. research and intellectual property from the influence of foreign adversaries, including the Chinese government and Communist Party. On Thursday, I met with Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez of Doral, Florida in my D.C. office. We discussed transportation and infrastructure matters affecting Doral residents, as well as the important work done by the Doral-based U.S. Southern Command in defense of our national security interests in Latin America and the Caribbean.
