NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICT

Dear Friend,

This week, we addressed local concerns relating to the rebuild of Tyndall Air Force Base and raised awareness for prostate cancer. Please read about my week below:

Rebuilding Tyndall Air Force BaseThis week, the Department of Defense officially announced its intent to put on hold several military construction projects and divert funds to building a wall at our southern border. It is unfortunate that the Democrats’ refusal to address the crisis at our border forced the President to use money already set aside for other military construction projects to continue construction of the border wall. Prior to Hurricane Michael completely devastating Tyndall Air Force Base, the Air Force was awarded $17 million to replace the older existing fire station that serves the flight line. When the base was devastated, the existing missions on the flight line deployed elsewhere. As we rebuild a totally new, more modern base, a new Fire/Crash Station is in the planned $4.7 billion project. For now however, the existing Fire/Crash Station serves our current traffic quite well and the new Fire/Crash station is on the drawing board. This short-term funding shift will have no impact on the future of Tyndall Air Force Base. I am grateful for the President’s ongoing commitment to the people of North Florida and look forward to continuing to work with his team to ensure the rebuild stays on track.

Prostate Cancer AwarenessSeptember is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month - a time to support those who are fighting the disease and educate those who may be at risk. This week, the Prostate Cancer Foundation quite literally shined a light on the disease by lighting landmarks in all 50 states blue. The "Light it Blue" initiative is a great way to bring awareness to men across the country about prostate cancer. In 2019, nearly 174,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and sadly 32,000 men will succumb to the disease. As a urologist, I have treated many who are fighting prostate cancer, but if caught early, this disease can be beat. Please urge the men in your life to get checked regularly

Florida State University ACC NetworkImage

Recently, Florida State University launched the ACC Network. This network will not only provide greater viewing access to both men's and women's sports played in the Atlantic Coast Conference, but it will also greatly benefit the academic community by integrating this technology into student courses. Thank you to President Thrasher for extending the invitation to see the behind-the-scenes of this operation.

Constituent Casework CornerA veteran received a bill from the Department of Veterans Affairs for emergency transport to a local hospital and he submitted the bill to the Department of Veterans Affairs for payment as soon as he received it. They first claimed the veteran never submitted the bill to them and, when the veteran submitted it again, they said the bill wasn’t submitted timely and denied payment.  After the veteran contacted my office, we were able to work with the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Community Care to have the veteran’s claim reviewed and it was determined the bill was submitted timely allowing them to pay the bill in full.
