FLORIDA - SENATOR RICK SCOTT'S WEEK IN REVIEW 06/07/2019

Image
This week, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion by Allied forces during World War II, Senator Scott joined a bipartisan group of U.S. Senators in Normandy, France. Senator Scott and his colleagues joined President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron at the American Cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer for a ceremony honoring the brave men and women who fought for freedom that day.

“My father served in World War II, and was among the soldiers of the 82nd Airborne in Normandy who fought for freedom on this day 75 years ago. It’s truly humbling to join my colleagues in France to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day. Today, we honor the sacrifices made here by the brave men and women fighting to free Europe from the yoke of tyranny and evil, and we recognize the incredible service of our nation’s military and veterans. As member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I will always work to support our American heroes.”- Senator Rick Scott

Senator Rick Scott released the following statement on the decision by Russian state defense contractor Rostec to withdraw from Venezuela. Rostec has trained Venezuelan troops and advised on securing arms contracts. This decision follows Senator Scott’s call for Russia and Cuba to get out of Venezuela and Nicaragua.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Russia and Cuba, along with China and Iran, are actively supporting Nicolas Maduro in Venzuela, who’s engaged in genocide against his own people. He is murdering women and children and creating a flood of refugees into surrounding countries.

“I’ve called for Russia, Cuba, China and Iran to get out of Venezuela if there is to be a peaceful resolution and for the entire international community to recognize Juan Guaidó as the legitimate President of Venezuela. I’m glad to see Russia is taking steps to withdraw from Venezuela. They should withdraw completely and they should do it now. Maduro’s support is crumbling and now is the time for him to step aside. The fight for freedom will prevail in Venezuela.” Read more HERE.
Senator Rick Scott released the below statement after the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced that $60 million will be awarded to the State of Florida to raise the unbridged sections of the Tamiami Trail. This announcement follows the letter Senator Scott sent in March to DOT Secretary Elaine Chao urging funding for the project, which is critical to the health of Florida’s Everglades.

Senator Rick Scott said, “As Governor, I fought to fund the Tamiami Trail Modification Next Step Phase I and championed significant funding for the Everglades, Florida’s springs, beaches and state parks. That included more than $2 billion to restore the Everglades and South Florida’s ecosystem. I would like to thank President Trump and DOT Secretary Elaine Chao for building on our efforts by awarding the $60 million I requested for this vital project. I look forward to continuing this strong federal-state partnership to finish the Tamiami Trail and continue our mission to preserve Florida’s historic Everglades National Park.” Read more, including Senator Scott's full March letter to Secretary Chao, HERE.
Senator Rick Scott released the following statement after the House’s passage of the $19.1 billion disaster relief package, which was passed by the Senate last month. The final package includes funding for the Florida Panhandle following the devastation from Hurricane Michael, over $1.2 billion to rebuild Tyndall Air Force Base, and the $600 million in disaster recovery funding for Puerto Rico that Senator Scott proposed in January.
Senator Rick Scott said, “I’m glad the House finally passed the disaster relief bill Florida’s Panhandle and Puerto Rico so desperately need to recover following Hurricanes Michael and Maria. It’s long overdue. Unfortunately, if there’s one thing I’ve learned in the 5 months I’ve been up here, it’s that Washington is broken. Our communities are hurting, and this process took way too long. Political games were more important than helping Americans, and that’s wrong. But I’m glad it finally got done. Once the President signs this bill, our communities will finally get the resources they need to continue rebuilding their lives and their communities.” Read more HERE.
Senators Rick Scott, Mike Braun, Kyrsten Sinema and Chris Coons introduced the Student Loan Tax Elimination Act of 2019, which reduces burdensome and unnecessary student debt by eliminating the "origination fee" on student loans.
Senator Rick Scott said, “Our students deserve every opportunity to graduate college and pursue successful careers without mountains of debt. Throughout my time as Governor, I focused on keeping college costs low so every Floridian could get an affordable education. In Florida, we’ve held the line on tuition for six years straight and increased the transparency of education expenses. Now, I’m proud to build on these efforts by supporting the Student Loan Tax Elimination Act so more students can afford a great education and pursue their dreams.” Read more HERE.
Senator Rick Scott released the following statement after President Trump’s Administration announced new restrictions on U.S. travel to Cuba, banning many education and recreational trips.
Senator Rick Scott said, “Cuba continues to be the most powerful force propping up Nicolas Maduro as he starves and kills his own people. The Cuban Regime is a willing and active participant in Maduro’s genocide. The United States is right to take every action possible to cut off ties with Cuba. I applaud President Trump for taking this important step to restrict U.S. travel to Cuba. Money spent in Cuba goes directly to the Castro Regime and helps keep Maduro and his brutal regime in power. Limiting the flow of money to Cuba is critical to freeing Venezuela and protecting the national security of the United States.” Read more HERE.

Senator Rick Scott released the following statement after House Democrats announced their plan to pad members of Congress’ salaries with an extra $4,500 next year.
Senator Rick Scott said, “Instead of solving real issues important to American families – like lowering the cost of prescription drugs and securing our border – Democrats are focused on raising their own salaries. Democrats want to get paid MORE while proposing radical ideas, like the Green New Deal and Medicare-for-All, that will force Americans to get paid LESS.
“This is just the latest example of how backwards Washington is. I’m fighting every day to make government work for Americans, not for career politicians looking to get wealthy off taxpayers. That’s why I introduced my Make Washington Work plan which includes a bill to end automatic pay raises for members of Congress.” Read more HERE.
Senator Rick Scott announced that he will host a Hurricane Preparedness Conference in Orlando on June 17th to bring together federal, state, local and private-sector partners to discuss hurricane preparedness and recovery. Last week, Senator Scott traveled the state to promote hurricane preparedness ahead of the 2019 Hurricane Season, which officially began June 1st.
Senator Rick Scott said, “Florida sets the standard for hurricane preparedness, but there is always more we can do to protect our families and businesses. In business and as Governor, I learned that the best way to get something done was to get everyone in the same room and work toward a common purpose.
“I’m proud to host our first Hurricane Preparedness Conference, which will bring together partners from state, local, and federal government, as well as the private sector, to discuss ways we can work together to make sure our communities have everything they need to be safe before, during, and after a storm. As a member of the Homeland Security Committee, which has jurisdiction over FEMA and other emergency response agencies, I’m proud to bring federal partners to Florida to build relationships ahead of any future natural disasters.” Read more HERE.
Senator Rick Scott, along with Senators Josh Hawley, Marco Rubio, Ron Johnson, Mike Braun, Kevin Cramer, Cindy Hyde-Smith and Dan Sullivan, sent a letter to the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America asking that they provide solutions to address the rising cost of prescription drugs. Senator Scott is committed to lowering the cost of prescription drugs and putting the American consumer back in charge of their healthcare decisions.
This year, Senator Scott introduced his America First Drug Pricing Plan to address the soaring costs of prescription drugs by promoting transparency and preventing drug companies from forcing American consumers to subsidize low drug prices in foreign countries. He also introduced the Protecting Patients from Surprise Medical Bills Act to end the practice of surprise medical billing and the Prescription Drug Price Reporting Act to create a consumer-friendly database of prescription drug prices. The U.S. Coast Guard keeps families in Florida safe by patrolling the beaches, shore waters, and maritime territory of the state, conducting search and rescue operations, and intercepting boat shipments of illegal drugs and the victims of human trafficking. The Coast Guard offloaded 26,000 pounds of cocaine and 1,500 pounds of marijuana Thursday morning at Port Everglades, the result of more than a dozen interdictions in the waters off the coast of Mexico and Central and South America from March until May.
