Black Hawks Rugby Club
The Las Vegas Black Hawks Rugby Club team is led by Coach Leonard Nell, who has his own remarkable story of coming here from South Africa and becoming a U.S. citizen.
Coach Leonard started the Black Hawks team for his own two boys and has funded this himself. His passion, drive and inspiration has led the team to becoming Nevada State Champions.

Two of his players are the latest superstars in our ward. Both are 17-year-old high school students - JD Bridges, who is dual enrolled at Arbor View High School and Odyssey Charter School, and Tyler Fujimoto, who attends Centennial High School. Both have been selected as two of only 23 boys to represent the U.S.A. at a rugby tournament in South Africa at the end of this month. JD Bridges already has signed a rugby scholarship commitment letter to Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri.
A rugby ball has been generously donated to help JD and Tyler raise funds for their trip. The ball is signed by the entire USA Eagles 7s rugby team, who are coming off their own victory at the America's Rugby Championship. Check out the entire amazing Black Hawks organization on their website, www.blackhawksrfc.com.
Congratulations to Coach Leonard and these two remarkable young men!

More Ward 6 Superstars
One of my favorite things is to recognize outstanding Ward 6 citizens and at the March 6, 2019, City Council meeting, it was my honor to recognize the brother and sister team of Zoe and Zachary Powell as our Ward 6 Citizens of the Month.
These two young people are brother and sister, working both together and separately at very high levels, serving their schools and our community.
Together they routinely serve meals at the Las Vegas Rescue Mission, have participated in the National Day of Service at Wayne Bunker Family Park, served on the clean-up crew for Walk for Wishes at Town Square, participated in Children’s Heart Foundation Walk at Fashion Show Mall, helped deliver to disabled elderly with Three Square-Catholic Charities and, this last Valentine’s Day, took it upon themselves to deliver cookies to the veterans at our VA Hospital.
Zachary is a senior at Northwest Career Technical Academy (NWCTA), specializing in culinary arts. He serves as secretary of the Senior Class of 2019, is a key player in Student Council and all activities of orientation, dances, teacher appreciations, and more. He is an outstanding student who placed third at the DECA (formerly Distributive Education Clubs of America) Conference Competition in Restaurant and Food Service category, works for In-N-Out Burger and has been accepted to The Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley, California.
Zoe is a sophomore at NWCTA who was honored with the Scholar-Athlete Award, with a grade point average of 3.7 or higher while participating in sports. Although she is enrolled at NWCTA, she has played basketball for Arbor View for two years. She also routinely helps with child care at Canyon Ridge Church.
Such wonderful young people and our ward is blessed to have them. Congratulations to Zachary and Zoe (and their great parents)! We look forward to more great things for you both in the future.
If you know someone in our ward deserving of recognition, please contact our office and let us know about them. Email Chance Bonaventura at cbonaventura@lasvegasnevada.gov or call him at 702-229-5463.
READ ACROSS WARD 6
To help celebrate Read Across America and to encourage our students to read more, it was my pleasure to read to students at two schools - the Coral Academy of Science-Centennial Hills and The Founders Academy.
It was exciting to visit the Coral Academy of Science-Centennial Hills, and to read to the fifth-grade class there.
We also talked about government and what we, as elected officials, do to represent the residents of our ward.

The staff at the Coral Academy of Science-Centennial Hills, is just wonderful - especially Serdar Yuksekkaya, the principal. They are doing an amazing job with our students.
|
The next stop was The Founders Academy and the first class we visited was kindergarten.
It is always a joy to spend time with children, and this age group is one of my favorite.
They enjoyed hearing the story of "What Do You Do with a Chance?" by Kobi Yamada. We talked about taking chances and overcoming fears - it was quite a discussion!

Next, we visited the third-grade class. I read most of a chapter from "Farmer Boy" by Laura Ingalls Wilder - a book they are reading for their schoolwork.
What a great group of students, with a wonderful teacher! We invited them all to visit City Hall for a grand tour!
