LAS VEGAS CITY COUNCILWOMAN WISHES ALL A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Happy New Year and here's to all the best
to all of you in 2019

We are here for you!  As your Councilwoman, I’m accountable to you and believe communication and connectivity is the key to ensure your ideas and concerns are addressed.

Your Ward 6 office worked diligently for you last year:

  • We corresponded through email over 50,000 times and mailed more than 60,000 letters and postcards using our us postal service to our neighbors in Ward 6.
  • Our good old fashion telephone served as a major communication source surpassing 3200 conversations.
  • Our office hosted 190 meetings.  We also attended another 102 meetings outside the office – this does not include city council briefings and council meetings, which add 70 more to the total.

Thousands of Ward 6 residents attended more than 30 events hosted in our ward, including:
  • Two shredding events
  • Our Senior Ice Cream Social & Senior lunches
  • Muffins with our Marshalls
  • Coffee with our Firefighters
  • Cinco de Mayo at Centennial Hills Amphitheater
  • Easter/spring celebrations at the Centennial Hills YMCA and Floyd Lamb Park.
  • Fishing Derby at Floyd Lamb Park
  • Fourth of July fireworks extravaganza at Skye Canyon Park.
  • Splash Back to School
  • Four movies in the park at Centennial Hills Amphitheatre.
  • Halloween Celebration at Floyd Lamb Park
  • Christmas Fantasy Forest at Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs.
  • Several pasta events at my home
  • And last night Hot Cocoa and cookies to bring 2019 in together!

  • We initiated a program to try to save the historic hay barn at Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs through the city of Las Vegas Historic Preservation Commission and the State Historic Preservation Office.
  • There are 262 homeowners associations in Ward 6, and we have met with many of them. If your HOA would like a meeting or for us to attend your HOA get together, please call our office and lets set it up.
  • If you do not have an HOA or a neighborhood association and your neighborhood has a concern or would like to set up a meet-and-greet, please give our office a call.
  • By the way - see these cement boots?  These are prominently displayed in my office as a reminder to all who visit, that Ward 6 deserves the very best and if they don't get the best...

Some of our 2018 Ward 6 highlights include:

  • We broke ground on the memorial park for Officer Alyn Beck.
  • The expansion of Teton Trails Park was put out for bid.
  • Agreement to build a Mountain Bike and Bicycle Pump Track at Floyd Lamb Park.
  • The Centennial Express (CX) direct bus route to the city center from our northwest area.
  • Preliminary design for a new 120-acre regional park in Ward 6 in conjunction with Clark County Commissioners Larry Brown and Marilyn Kirkpatrick.
  • Made several trips to Washington, D.C., to work with all our Congressional and U.S. Senate Delegations on Bureau of Land Management land that would be better managed by the city of Las Vegas.
  • Working with the Air Force to spur the creation of amenities and housing for our military.
  • Worked with our Animal Foundation and various rabbit groups to manage the problems with rabbits abandoned at Floyd Lamb Park.  No problem -- we created a “Rabbitat”!
  • Focused on making parks friendlier for special-needs children, including the installation of a sensory wall at Gilcrease Brothers Park and working with the Kiwanis Clubs to install a wheelchair swing at Centennial Hills Park soon.
  • Added speed humps in neighborhoods where needed.
  • Made improvements to Bradley Bridle Horse Park.
  • Skye Canyon is well underway.
  • Our Northwest Las Vegas Metropolitan Police First Tuesday, hosted by our very own Captain Sasha Larkin, has grown so big they had to move to the Academy auditorium.
What about Las Vegas during 2018?

  • We got sports! The Vegas Golden Knights brought back a small town feeling, and even our Mayor got the Mayor of Winnipeg to wear a Knights jersey from a bet! We now have the Las Vegas Aces women’s basketball team; the Las Vegas Lights soccer team and we’re building a stadium for the Raiders.
  • National Finals Rodeo brings enormous crowds, and for the first time, downtown Las Vegas had our very own arenas and equestrian center, which contributed to bringing over 10,000 visiting cowgirls and cowboys right into the middle of downtown, in addition to the multitudes at the Thomas and Mack.
  • Who says Las Vegas is just Showgirls and Gambling? We've come a long way baby! And we are growing full steam ahead.

Just a little about my family…

Here's Jackson!  My newest grandson arrived in October.

I now have six beautiful grandchildren!

Our Family had a great Christmas and we hope you did too!

What can you expect in 2019?

  • Communication, communication and more communication
  • We will be working on a preliminary plan and design of the Officer Igor Soldo Memorial Park.
  • Meetings and more meetings – if you need to meet with us, please call.
  • A new bike park with mountain bike trails at Floyd Lamb Park.
  • Another great season from the Vegas Golden Knights.
  • Continuing to work on the new 120-acre regional park for the northwest area.
  • Lots of community events.
  • The Raiders are coming!
Have a magnificent New Year!

All my love, your Councilwoman,

Michele
