States Win Another Major Case Against Obamacare

In a decision that has gotten almost no media attention, six states led by Texas have won another round against the Obama administration implementation of Obamacare.
Judge Reed O’Connor, a federal judge in Texas, threw out the Obama administration’s imposition of a federal fee or tax on states as a condition of continuing to receive Medicaid funds. O’Conner ruled March 5 that the fee violates the non-delegation doctrine of the Constitution and the requirements of the Administrative Procedure Act.
The 2010 Obamacare law imposed a “health insurance providers fee” on medical insurers to help pay for the subsidies provided by the federal government to … Read More

Shutdown looming, Congress and White House Seek Budget Deal

Congressional leaders and the White House are pressing to strike an accord on a $1.3 trillion catchall spending bill, though disputes remain over immigration, abortion and a massive rail project that pits President Donald Trump against his most powerful Democratic adversary.
An agreement by Monday would pave the way for a House vote on Wednesday. Action is needed by midnight Friday to avert another government shutdown.

Andrew McCabe, the former No. 2 FBI official fired at the weekend by the attorney general, called his dismissal an attempt to undermine special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, according to a report by The New York Times.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired McCabe Friday night over allegations he authorized the disclosure of sensitive information to a reporter.
McCabe, the deputy FBI director who served as the bureau’s acting director after James Comey’s ousting last May by President Donald Trump, said he believes his dismissal is an effort to derail Mueller’s probe. … Read More

Trump Presses GOP to Change Senate Rules

The White House is losing patience with the Senate’s backlog of nominees, sparking talk about enacting changes in the rules to speed up consideration of President Donald Trump’s judicial and executive branch, The Hill reported on Sunday.
The Trump administration is putting pressure on Senate Republicans to fight back against opposition efforts to delay its agenda, especially if GOP discussions with Democrats about bipartisan changes to Senate rules flounders.
Vice President Mike Pence held a private meeting with the Senate GOP Conference this past week on the subject to stress its importance and demonstrate the urgency of … Read More
