FREEDOM WORKS 08/07/2014

1. Who You Callin' a Grifter
I believe this is what people in the psych biz call “projection.” Former congressman, and current transportation lobbyist, Steve LaTourette recently penned a column accusing the Tea Party—of which I am a proud member—of “lining its pockets while Republicans are actually trying to get things done.” LaTourette is an established authority on the topic of lining pockets in Washington, given that he has increased his personal wealth by 11,000 percent since 2004.
The column, which sets up a ridiculous distinction between the “grifting” and “governing” wings of the Republican Party, is a rhetorical rant packed with ad hominem attacks and Ronald Reagan name-drops, but lacking in any mention of the Constitution or a solid policy agenda. Imagery without ideas. It’s an out-of-touch lobbyist charlatan’s idea of what a libertarian populist is supposed to sound like. And as a result, it reads about as authentic as Mitt Romney trying to sing “Who Let the Dogs Out.” Read more

2. FreedomWorks for America Congratulates Justin Amash on MI-3 Primary Victory
FreedomWorks for America congratulates Justin Amash on his primary victory in Michigan’s third district, despite enduring a barrage of personal attack ads by advocates for his Chamber-backed opponent, Brian Ellis. FreedomWorks for America President Matt Kibbe commented:
“It’s hard to upgrade from a representative who has never missed a vote, explains every vote he makes on social media, and leads the charge on civil liberties and ending federal abuses of power. Justin Amash is a thought leader in the Freedom Caucus, and we plan to help his constituents send him back to Washington to keep on the fight.” Read more here...

4. Passing the USA Freedom Act: Everybody Wins
Last week, Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) re-introduced a bill to protect Americans from unauthorized government spying, the USA Freedom Act (S. 2685). After the House passed a dangerously watered-down version of the bill earlier this year, the new Senate bill represents a compromise - much stronger than the House bill, though not as comprehensive as privacy activists might desire.
Regardless, Senator Leahy’s new bill would be an important first step in reining in the virtually unlimited surveillance of American citizens. It also represents a great political opportunity for a Senate mired in bitter partisan struggle to unite around an issue that has appeal across the political spectrum. Read more here...
5. The Ex-Im Bank and Other Screwy New Deal Programs
The Export-Import Bank was established in 1934 by FDR as part of the New Deal. It has outlived its welcome by 80 years. Here are a few other programs from the New Deal that, unlike Ex-Im, mercifully met their end decades ago.
• During his monetary reform programs, FDR made it illegal for private citizens to own gold, except in very small amounts, via Executive Order 6102. This was not reversed until 1974. Read more here...
6. FreedomWorks for America Congratulates Tim Huelskamp on KS-1 Primary Victory
FreedomWorks for America congratulates Rep. Tim Huelskamp on winning his primary for U.S. Congress in Kansas’ first district. FreedomWorks for America President Matt Kibbe commented:

Huelskamp in the general election, and look forward to having him back in Washington to fight for the American people.” Read more here....

8. The Judiciary with Ken Cuccinelli "The History and Importance of the Judiciary, Pt. 2"
In this final segment with former Attorney General of Virginia Ken Cuccinelli, FreedomWorks Policy Analyst Patrick Hedger continues the discussion of the proper role of the courts and the checks and balances enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. In Part 1, Cuccinelli discussed the powers of the judiciary to check the other two branches of government. In this segment, he examines the powers held by the executive and legislative branches, as well as the people, to impact the courts and check against judicial overreach. He also explains how the U.S. legal system differs from other legal systems around the world. Most notably, the U.S. has a common law tradition and an adversarial system, although both of these characteristics are under threat from the ever-expanding administrative state and the use of secret courts, where nobody is arguing the other side.
