NEVADANS ON DEBT LIMIT VOTE

The following is Rep. Joe Heck’s (R-Nevada) statement on today's vote on the debt limit bill…

“It has been a common practice to combine an increase in the debt limit with immediate spending cuts or structural reforms that will reduce the deficit and debt over the long-term.

In the past, there has been bipartisan agreement that it is irresponsible to continue to increase our debt limit without making changes to current policies or spending levels. Those days seem to be behind us as the President and Democrats in Congress would prefer to continue the status quo rather than negotiate on the debt limit.

I opposed this increase because raising our debt limit without making even modest reductions to spending levels is irresponsible.

And here’s the statement from Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nevada) on his “no” vote on the debt limit bill…

“Our nation is facing $17 trillion in debt with nothing but more spending in our future. Yet again, Congress is raising the limit on our nation’s credit card without making any attempt to prevent doing so again in the near future. Congress cannot continue to consistently increase our nation’s debt without any conditions or any effort to become fiscally responsible.

“Washington D.C. must not turn a blind eye to the consequences that runaway debt poses for our nation. Moving forward, Congress must enact a long-term solution that addresses our nation’s spending problem and places our country on the path to economic stability.”

DISPATCH FROM WINNEMUCCA

I received the following first-hand report on the Winnemucca Lincoln Day Dinner last week from a longtime newsletter subscriber…

“We had our Lincoln Day Dinner last night and the whole hall of the west side of the Winnemucca Convention Center was full.  Governor Sandoval did NOT show up but he sent a representative.

Mark Hutchison showed up and all he talked about was how he represented Nevada pro-bono on the Affordable Care Act.  Then he talked about Constitutional Law, which has nothing to do with the office of Lieutenant Governor.

“I asked him why he voted to extend the sunsets and he gave me a lame excuse of the budget needed to be balanced.  I asked him why he would not sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge and he again used the excuse of balancing the budget.  Governor Sandoval's representative shadowed Mark everywhere he went like a puppet master; what a joker this guy is.

Sue Lowden came and she told why she was running and about the duties of the office of lieutenant governor and her experience of running a business.  Sue was very sharp in my opinion and she has got my vote.”

By the way, multiple reports indicate that Hutch’s stump speech at every stop includes talk about him defending the Constitution, the 10th Amendment and how the federal government should not own so much land in Nevada. Great. However...

Not only, as our subscriber noted, doesn’t the LG job deal with constitutional law (maybe he should have run for AG instead), but Hutch’s new-fangled constitutionalism appears to be nothing more than a campaign conversion.

Indeed, I hear that “Moderate Mark” introduced 14 bills in the 2013 legislative session and not one of them had anything to do with the 10th Amendment or any federal intrusion in our state.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

"It’s time to concede that no one has been more adept or aggressive about delaying and defanging Obamacare than Obama himself. Systematically and with an eye toward his party’s immediate political troubles, Obama has reshaped, photo-shopped, reimagined, and reengineered Obamacare. … Obamacare’s worst enemy is Obama.” – Columnist Major Garrett in National Journal
