Fire Dan Klaich as NSHE Chancellor

(Las Vegas, NV) - Citizen Outreach today emailed a letter to the thirteen members of the Nevada System of Higher Education's (NSHE) Board of Regents, signed by a coalition of conservative leaders, calling on the Board to terminate the employment of Chancellor Dan Klaich.

The letter was sparked by comments attributed to Klaich in a Reno Gazette-Journal story last week in which the chancellor clearly insinuated that UNR President Milt Glick's death on August 16, 2011, was possibly caused by Gov. Brian Sandoval's proposed budget cuts to the higher education system.  The letter reads, in part:

Reuters reports that: "The legislation commits the Obama administration to higher domestic oil and gas production, requiring the White House to boost offshore oil production to 3 million barrels a day and natural gas output at 10 billion cubic feet each day in the government's upcoming 2012-2017 offshore drilling plan."

Oil and gasoline prices are soaring, and the Energy Department forecasts U.S. oil production in the Gulf of Mexico will decline by 190,000 barrels per day this year and in 2012.

Studies indicate there may be more than one trillion barrels of oil in oil shale, a type of sedimentary rock found in Wyoming, Utah and Colorado's Western Slope. THAT'S NEARLY THREE TIMES THE RESERVES IN SAUDI ARABIA. The USGS also predicts that there are up-to 16 billion barrels of oil in Alaska's ANWR region.

We could, and SHOULD, be back to drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

We SHOULD be drilling off of our other coasts (since China and Russia already are).

We SHOULD be converting shale oil from the mountains in Colorado.

But environmentalists claim that ALL these sources would damage the environment, and simply won't allow this to happen. Instead of trying to find a minimal impact solution, they simply say NO. A star informer at Guantánamo Bay has won his freedom by making statements against at least 123 other prisoners there, according to the camp's leaked archives. The US military describe him as an "invaluable" source who has shown "exceptional co-operation" and shared his "vast knowledge" with the camp authorities.

Energy in America: EPA Rules Force Shell to Abandon Oil Drilling Plans

Shell Oil Company has announced it must scrap efforts to drill for oil this summer in the Arctic Ocean off the northern coast of Alaska. The decision comes following a ruling by the EPA’s Environmental Appeals Board to withhold critical air permits. The move has angered some in Congress and triggered a flurry of legislation aimed at stripping the EPA of its oil drilling oversight.

Shell has spent five years and nearly $4 billion dollars on plans to explore for oil in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas. The leases alone cost $2.2 billion. Shell Vice President Pete Slaiby says obtaining similar air permits for a drilling operation in the Gulf of Mexico would take about 45 days. He’s especially frustrated over the appeal board’s suggestion that the Arctic drill would somehow be hazardous for the people who live in the area. “We think the issues were really not major,” Slaiby said, “and clearly not impactful for the communities we work in.”
The closest village to where Shell proposed to drill is Kaktovik, Alaska. It is one of the most remote places in the United States. According to the latest census, the population is 245 and nearly all of the residents are Alaska natives. The village, which is 1 square mile, sits right along the shores of the Beaufort Sea, 70 miles away from the proposed off-shore drill site.

But at an American Veterans outpost tucked deep in the Pocono Mountains this week, freshman Republican Rep. Lou Barletta took heat from every direction — from Democrats angry with the tax cuts in the GOP budget, to conservatives who thought he caved on the last continuing resolution vote, to a precocious 16-year-old critical of the lawmaker’s environmental record.
