NAKISHIMA V. JONES

State senate District 9 candidates Mari Nakashima (R) and Justin Jones (D) squared off onJon Ralston’s Face to Face show Monday night. 

Nakashima comported herself well (except for the overuse of the phrase “you know,” you know).  She had answers to the questions about the budget that EVERY Republican candidate should KNOW Jon is going to ask. Not the answers I would have given, but far better than the answers most GOP candidates give.

Jones, on the other hand, was a complete disaster.  Came off as a sniveling, double-talking lawyer.  In other words, he was himself.  Ralston asked him straight, legitimate questions multiple times about his role in a high profile lawsuit, and each time Jones belched up weasel answers…before pleading the lawyer version of the 5th Amendment: attorney-client privilege.

The depth of Nakashima’s stated fiscal conservatism remains questionable, as she has listened to GOP leaders, lobbyists and her handlers and opted not to sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge.  That aside, she’s clearly preferable over Jones who, unbelievably, ended the debate denying there’s a housing crisis in his district. 

Talk about clueless!

Here is the most profound insight of the week I can give you — in American politics, if a Republican candidate loses, the media blames it on the candidate being too conservative. If a Republican candidate wins, the media credits the candidate drifting toward the center. The only sure fire loser in American politics is the conservative movement, which is remarkable given the amazing success the conservative movement has had in spite of this.

What we are seeing now on the political landscape is a growing consensus among opinion makers and average voters that Mitt Romney cannot win the election. It is not true. He can, in fact, still win. The election is, in fact, exceeding close. But the Romney campaign is a victim of a perception it itself has helped foster. Like John McCain before him, Romney seems more at ease punching other Republicans than his Democrat opponent. The public is picking up on this and perceive him unwilling or unable to fight for victory. The public is, mentally, beginning to grow weary of this campaign and Romney must work to change perception if he is to win.

In an interview this morning, Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad referred to Israel’s protests about Iranian nuclear weapon development as merely “noise” to be tuned out.  Curiously, President Obama used the same description of Israeli concerns (saying he will “block out any noise that is out there” in deciding Middle East policy) in a CBS news program over the weekend.

I pray you will join Liberty Counsel in taking a truly important stand with Israel – even if you have done so in our past campaigns.  Please read my important update below – Mat.

Even United States’ policy in the Middle East has become equivocal – to the point that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has felt it necessary to remind a watching world that Israel reserves the right to act unilaterally to defend its people.

US presidents useless - Putin

"I think that the missile defense problem will not be solved if Obama is reelected or not," Putin. President Vladimir Putin has been aware of the fact that the US has been and will continue pointing missiles at Russia and surrounding it with military bases. He knew that the promises from Reagan to Gorbachev were broken in the 90's. He never expected to get treated better than the US treated the Native Americans. Even if Obama promised the moon Putin would not have believed him. So, why the meeting?

Two hours alone together and I'm sure Putin broke his smile and terrified Obama with facts Obama thought surely were known to him and his CIA. Revealing to Obama, "We know your plans, where your military and agents are located. WW3 will be on your head and legacy". Obama was faced with only saying he was not in charge and he had no choice. Cold hard facts and laying their cards on the table with the entire world at stake must have made 2 hours seem like 2 years to Obama.
