The economy is in advanced stages of decrepitude due to debt: public and private. Nevertheless, a just-released ABC News/Washington Post poll revealed that 58 percent of self-identified Republicans believe that if their government doesn't continue to borrow apace, things will get worse.

In legislative language, our wily political pitch men have been granted license to lift the debt ceiling! Quick-fix quacks in both chambers can now proceed to borrow by further inflating the country's fiat money supply.

Remember last week, when President Obama threw a fit and stormed out of budget negotiations with the House Republican leadership? Do you recall what made him blow a fuse? It was when House Majority Leader Eric Cantor suggested a short-term deal to raise the debt limit a bit, because Democrats and Republicans could use more time to settle their differences.

Personally, I'm more than a little tired of short-term deals. We’ve had over 800 days of punting. I thought the federal government was supposed to be a $3.7 trillion high-performance engine of central planning and economic wisdom. That’s the reason given for allowing it to take over car companies, bail out banks, and seize control of health insurance. I don't know how liberals can make such arguments with a straight face, when the Leviathan has been thrashing around for over two years without a budget.

Hiding Behind Immunity

Article II section 1 of the U.S. Constitution ends with this sentence:

“Before he [the President] enters on the execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation: ‘I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.’”

Members of Congress take a similar oath of office.

The complaint filed in Liberty Legal Foundation’s lawsuit against Obamacare accuses President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid of violating their oaths of office. Rather than answer this accusation, they claimed immunity. Their motion to dismiss states:

Senate rejects 'Cut, Cap, Balance'

The Democratic-controlled Senate on Friday narrowly voted to block a Republican measure that would force Congress to pass a stringent balanced budget amendment and cap spending before increasing the debt ceiling.

The legislation, a conservative priority, never had a chance of passing, but the strictly partisan 51-46 vote to table the “Cut, Cap and Balance” bill highlighted the partisan divide in Washington over how to tackle spending and raise the nation’s $14.3 trillion debt limit. Before the vote Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) again called the plan “radical” and “one of the worst pieces of legislation to ever be placed on the floor of the United States Senate.”

The vote handed conservatives a chance to showcase their strategy for restricting future spending in Washington, but it faced a veto from President Barack Obama, so it was more of a symbolic vote for Republicans to put their mark on deficit reduction.
