Vice President Pence defended President Trump's attack on a federal judge who ruled against a travel ban from seven Muslim countries, and predicted Sunday that a higher court would eventually uphold the measure in the name of national security. "We are going to win the arguments because we’re going to take the steps necessary to protect the country, which the president of the United States has the authority to do," Pence said on Fox News Sunday, one in a series of news show interviews. Pence told ABC's This Week that Trump was "speaking his mind" when he denounced a "so-called" judge — U.S. District Judge James Robart, based in Seattle — for ruling against the travel ban. Early Sunday, a federal appeals court rejected a request by Trump's Justice Department to immediately restore the travel ban; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit based in San Francisco said a reply from the Trump administration is due on Monday. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., also speaking on Fox, said Trump exceeded his authority with the order and people are well within their rights to challenge it in court, probably to the highest in the land. President Trump has formally asked a federal court to overturn a Seattle judge’s injunction halting his immigration ban, after a day in which he criticized the judge’s ruling as “ridiculous” and a “terrible decision. In a short notice of appeal filed Saturday evening, the Department of Justice, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson formally notified the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals of their intention. The filing contains no legal arguments; those are expected to come later. “We’ll win,” Trump said Saturday night as he arrived for a Red Cross gala ball at his Mar-a-Lago resort. “For the safety of our country, we’ll win.” The appeal filing was the latest in a series of twists, most of which were chronicled on Twitter by Trump, that saw federal officials dismantle the travel ban Saturday after a judge blocked it. Sunday marks the centennial of one of the darkest, most discriminatory immigration turns in American history: the passage of the Immigration Act of 1917. The law banned immigrants from the Asiatic Barred Zone, a new, massive region that included Saudi Arabia, most of China, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. Now, 100 years and 16 presidents later, some see that ugly history repeating itself. Less than a week after moving into the White House, President Trump signed an order to increase deportations of an undocumented immigrant population that is 77% Hispanic and 15% Asian. He then instituted a temporary travel ban from countries that are 98% Muslim and suspended the admission of refugees who come mostly from Africa and the Middle East. In some ways, the 1917 law serves as a reminder of how different the times were back then. It banned “idiots” and “imbeciles” and created a literacy test targeting immigrants from Eastern Europe. But immigration historians see similarities in the hostility toward foreign settlers that’s on display a century later. Trump said he halted the refugee program for 120 days and barred immigration from seven majority-Muslim countries for 90 days to give security agencies time to improve vetting procedures for people coming from terror-prone countries. The Trump administration faces several hurdles in its effort to permanently reinstate an executive order that bans travelers from seven majority-Muslim nations as well as refugees. By blocking enforcement of the measure Friday, a federal district judge in Washington state set up a judicial process that appears to favor immigration-rights groups and other opponents to the ban at every potential stage of the process. To start, the administration faces an uphill battle in Judge James Robart’s court. “The states are likely to suffer irreparable harm in the absence of preliminary relief,” he said in his seven-page order, referring to Washington state and Minnesota, which joined the case. The government began the appeals process Saturday night. To win, it will have to convince a panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, based in San Francisco. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he doesn’t view Russian President Vladimir Putin in the same way that President Trump does. During an interview on CNN’s State of the Union, the Kentucky Republican called Putin a “thug” and former KGB agent who was not elected in a way most would consider “a credible election.” Putin also invaded the sovereign nation of Ukraine and “messed around in our elections,” said McConnell. “I don’t think there’s any equivalency to the way the Russians conduct themselves and the way the United States does,” said McConnell. McConnell responded to Trump’s earlier comments. When Fox News host Bill O’Reilly asked Trump about allegations that Putin is “a killer” who targets his political enemies, Trump replied: “We got a lot of killers. David Coulson, an ATF senior agent in the Chicago field office, said the agency is still early in the process of developing strategies to bolster its efforts in the nation’s third-largest city. “ATF is exploring various options as we are committed to furthering law enforcement efforts in Chicago,” Coulson said. “One of those options is to send additional agents to Chicago on permanent transfers.” President Trump has repeatedly criticized Mayor Rahm Emanuel and city officials for the crime surge, which left Chicago with more that 760 murders and 4,300 shooting victims last year.
