Senate
Republicans' Bait-and-Switch Fundraising
By
Richard A. Viguerie
Hundreds
of thousands of conservatives receive National Republican Senatorial Committee
fundraising letters that would be considered “bait-and-switch” or even money
laundering in the commercial world.
The
NRSC asks conservatives to send their hard-earned money with the promise of
helping elect senators who will cut taxes, fight big government and protect
liberty. Conservatives may be sending money believing that, but the NSRC uses
your money to help elect progressive, big-government establishment incumbents,
the ones conservatives would prefer not be in office because they are part of
the problem.
One
recent fundraising letter from NRSC Chairman Jerry Moran of Kansas says, “[W]e
are contacting citizens [in your area] who we believe support the Republican
Party’s core conservative principles of small government, lower taxes, a strong
national defense and a belief in our inalienable individual liberties.”
The
letter adds, “To stop Barack Obama and capture control of the U.S. Senate, we
need the support of loyal conservatives all across America.”
Sen.
John Thune of South Dakota sent another NSRC letter saying, “If we’re going to
change the direction of our GOP and build a party that can win in 2014 and
beyond, that process must be driven by individuals like you all over
America—patriotic men and women who understand why we need to enact new
conservative policies.” He added, “The Democrats have enacted policies that are
helping government bureaucrats, union bosses and politically-connected
corporations, but hurting working families and small businesses.”
Reading
these fundraising letters, you’d think the NRSC was supporting tea party
principles.
I
recently called on conservatives to boycott the NRSC, noting: “In the wake of
the National Republican Senatorial Committee’s announcement that, after
incumbent Senator Thad Cochran, R-Miss., finished second in the Mississippi
Republican primary, the NRSC is ‘all in for Thad’ in the June 24 runoff.”
The
problem, however, is far wider and more serious than just this one primary race
in Mississippi, where the NRSC-backed incumbent Thad Cochran did not receive as
many votes as the tea party challenger, Chris McDaniel.
Conservatives
are asked to send the NRSC money, which is then funneled to establishment
Republicans who continue to oversee and participate in the growth of government,
violations of the Constitution and the consequent destruction of our liberties.
So many of these establishment Republicans are actually progressives who are
part of the ruling class that is transforming America — in varying ways and
speeds — away from our constitutional republic.
Progressive
Republicans are helping wreck America and are saddling future generations with
unimaginable debt and lost opportunity. They have been selling out
conservatives and America’s principles of liberty for more than 102 years, as I
explain in my new book, “Takeover.”
The
NRSC’s fundraising messages targeted to a conservative audience are misleading.
Nowhere does the NRSC say it will use conservative contributions to help defeat
conservative challengers in Republican primaries, yet that is what the NRSC has
done.
The
NSRC is funneling money to Big Government Republicans who violate core
conservative principles of small government and our inalienable individual
liberties and who help government bureaucrats and politically connected
corporations.
As
with “you can keep your doctor” or a bad used car salesman, conservatives
should know that the NRSC is like any other bait-and-switch scam.
