RESPONSE ACTION NETWORK NEWSLETTER 10/03/2013

Response Action Network Newsletter
Here is your weekly update on the politics and policies affecting our liberties.

D.C. REFUSES TO SHUT DOWN

Response Action Network Washington, D.C. is a very strange place. The Constitution grants Congress considerable power over the District, including having final say over its annual budget.  This has long irked local DC politicians. What happens if the federal government shuts down?  Much of D.C. government would, too, except for essential personnel.  Sensing an opportunity to get a bit of publicity, D.C. 's very liberal Mayor, Vincent Gray, decided last week that all city employees were essential, and he would not send a single one of them home if Congress fails to adopt a new spending plan.  Gray hoped he would be arrested for his trouble  - it's against federal law for him to spend money without Congress having first appropriated it. But as putting Gray in handcuffs would require Eric Holder to do something constructive with his time, the Mayor, instead, found a pot of money he and the city council can use to keep the city's trash pick-up, libraries and parks going strong.

OBAMACARE OFFICIALLY BEGINS

Response Action Network The health insurance exchanges at the heart of Obamacare are set to open for business Tuesday. No one expects things to go smoothly for the massively complex computer systems on opening day.  Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso says the exchanges are "are being held together right now with duct tape and chicken wire." Even so, we may look back on Obamacare's first full day of operation as its high water mark. Some economists believe the incentives built into the law will unavoidably lead to a "death spiral" in insurance rates, where the healthiest people simply refuse to buy coverage, despite the individual mandate and its tax penalties. That would leave insurers and the government with older, sicker  - and much more costly  - policy holders.  Costs then begin to spiral out of control, and insurance becomes unaffordable for anyone.  Barrasso's " duct tape and chicken wire" may look pretty good by then.

SNL LAMPOONS OBAMACARE

Response Action Network It's no secret that "Saturday Night Live" has treated President Obama with kid gloves during his time in office. That ended this past weekend, when the show's opening sketch took dead aim at Obamacare. If you haven't seen it yet, you owe it to yourself to take a look (thanks to the Massachusetts Tea Party).

THE MOST POPULAR QUESTION ABOUT OBAMACARE . . .

Response Action Network Is, according to the official website, "how do I get an exemption from the fee for not having health coverage?"

NO HILLARY BIOPIC FOR CNN

Response Action NetworkFormer Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was supposed to be the subject of a "documentary" on CNN.  It's been called off.  Republicans, fearing it would be a fawning portrait of Clinton and a thinly-disguised attempt to help her win the White House in 2016, threatened  to exclude CNN from covering the 2016 presidential debates. But it wasn't just Republicans who were down on the idea of a Hillary documentary.  Democrats were just as against the idea. Their fear? It would bring up all those inconvenient stories about Hillary's shady past (and present), while also raising questions about how the Clintons worked their political connections to amass a fortune estimated at more than $200 million.
