ALABAMA’S IMMIGRATION LAW RESULTING IN LOWER UNEMPLOYMENT
Alabama’s legislative crackdown on illegal immigration is already putting Americans back to work in the jobs once held by an illegal immigrant workforce. Among other measures, the legislation requires businesses within the state to use the free federal E-Verify system to confirm potential employees are in fact eligible to work in the country causing large numbers of illegal immigrants to flee the state for friendlier ones. During October, Alabama’s unemployment rate fell a half percentage point while the national average only fell 0.1 percent during the same period. Marshall County, GA – a known hotbed for illegal immigrant labor – saw its unemployment numbers decrease by 0.7 percent in just one month for a total of nearly two full percentage points since the tough law went into effect in June.
