MUTH'S TRUTHS 07/26/2007

FIRST FRIDAY HAPPY HOUR IS NOT CANCELLED!

The next “star-studded, fun-filled, action-packed” First Friday Happy Hour will be on Friday, August 5, 2011 at Mundo: A Culinary Haute Spot at the World Market Center in downtown Las Vegas from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.

Believe it or not, this will be our two year anniversary!  And to help us celebrate this momentous occasion, this month’s VIP guest will be Anita MonCrief.

Moncrief is the ACORN/Project Vote Whistleblower.  In 2008, she came forward, first as a confidential source of The New York Times and, after The New York Times backed away, publicly, to expose the damage that ACORN has done to the impoverished and marginalized communities, as well as its rampant voter fraud.

She also began to blog and write about corruption within the ACORN/Project Vote network of corporations.  In June 2009, Project Vote/ACORN filed a lawsuit against MonCrief in an attempt to silence her. In March 2010, the ACORN/Project Vote lawsuit was dismissed.

Anita has appeared on numerous radio and television programs including, The Laura Ingraham Show, The O’Reilly Factor, The Sean Hannity Radio show and Fox News programs. She is a regular contributor to Big Government, Hot Air, NetRight Daily, RedState, and other Conservative news websites.

In addition to joining us for the First Friday Happy Hour, Anita will also be conducting a workshop on how to stop election fraud before the event.  Click here for details – but register FAST…there are only 40 seats available!

Come meet Anita next week at the First Friday Happy Hour.  Mundo, by the way, will again be providing a FREE shuttle bus to-and-from the First Friday Arts Festival downtown WHICH HAS NOT BEEN CANCELLED, only scaled back a little.  Free parking, no cover charge, happy hour drink and appetizer specials.

Be there or be talked about!

PRETZEL LOGIC

My friend and political pontificator extraordinaire Jon Ralston is gonna need a chiropractor after all the contortions he’s going through to cover Gov. Brian Sandoval’s tax-hiking you-know-what these days.

In a Ralston Flash tweet this afternoon, Jon wrote: “Sandoval right on counties attempt to get money back: Let the courts decide.”  He then linked to this full dissertation on how the governor was right seven weeks ago for NOT fighting lawsuits likely to be brought by local governments, but is also right now for fighting two similar lawsuits being brought by Clark and Washoe counties.

The difference, according to Jon, is that the governor raised taxes to make the other potential lawsuits go away, thus avoiding an end-of-session budget showdown. But now, there’s no budget deadline so, what the heck, let’s hash it out in court.  In other words, it’s all about the timing, not the principle or legal argument.

Sorry, but that dog won’t hunt.

PROPERTY RIGHTS VS. URBAN BLIGHT

Las Vegas Sun columnist J. Patrick Coolican inked a piece this week pointing out all the unfinished construction projects in Las Vegas, including a large vacant piece of land owned by MGM Grand on the southwest corner of the Las Vegas Blvd. and Sahara.  He suggests that space be used for a sort of tented “flea market” that would be “filled with an eclectic mix of high- and low-end arts and crafts and food and drink.”

And Robert Fielden, an urban planner, thinks that would be a good idea.

BABY, YOU CAN DRIVE MY CAR

In a recent op/ed published by the Las Vegas Sun, Nevada Department of Transportation chieftess Susan Martinovich complained (again) that “Nevada will be billions short in funding road construction and maintenance” in the coming years.  So she is advocating a study on possibly establishing a Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) fee in which drivers would be “charged a fee based on the number of miles driven” rather than be taxed by the gallon of gas.

In other words, after Americans were encouraged (browbeat and compelled) to buy and drive more fuel-efficient cars, we’re now being told that we can’t enjoy the lower taxes we’re paying because of the more fuel-efficient cars because the government “needs” more money.

Reader Comment: “The other discriminatory part of the VMT is that it will tax only Nevada residents that have registered their vehicles at the Nevada DMV.  What do we do to recuperate the fair share of road usage by our visiting tourists or the people that live here but never change their vehicle registration from the other state they live in because it is much cheaper to maintain the registration of another state.” - Annette Teijeiro

IN OTHER NEWS

The state announced today that Nevada’s taxable sales for May 2011 jumped a little over 7% compared to May 2010. To which tax-hiking Ass. Mark Sherwood, Messaging Chairman for the Assembly Republican Caucus, had the following to say:

(Crickets)

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

“Did you see John Boehner’s speech last night? It was one distortion after another about the GOP’s plan and President Obama.  The takeaway is this: Boehner and the GOP will walk away from any plan that doesn’t cripple President Obama. They don’t care about the economy. They don’t care about your job. They don’t care about anything but taking over Congress and the White House.” - Jason Rosenbaum, Director of Online Communications for the DCC, distorting the GOP’s motives in a shameless fundraising email on Tuesday

“(Las Vegas conservative talk-show host Alan Stock) was replaced by a generic show called "Live and Local" which has been hosted for the past week by JD Hayworth of Arizona???????????????  How local is that?” – Battle Born Politics blog, 7/26/11
