NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICT Dear Friend, This past week, I received outstanding news that I’ve received an appointment to the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition between the U.S. and the Chinese Communist Party, led by Chairman Mike Gallagher (Wisconsin-08). China is a foreign agitator and a serious threat to the United States and our allies. Overreliance on imported medical supplies from China compromises national security, our healthcare system's stability, and our nation's overall security. Biden Administration policies have only liberated and emboldened China. Speaker McCarthy is correct: the danger posed by our dependence on China is dire.  I'm honored to be on the China Select Committee in addition to my role on the House Energy and Commerce Committee. I look forward to working with my colleagues to hold the CCP accountable. This bill limits the drawdown of petroleum in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve until the Department of Energy develops a plan to increase the percentage of federal lands leased for oil and gas production. Watch my speech here.  Supporting Holocaust Education My colleagues and I held a press conference on Friday in honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day. During the press conference, Congressman Gottheimer introduced the Holocaust Education & Antisemitism Lessons (HEAL) Act. This bill would direct the Department of Education to study Holocaust education efforts in public elementary and secondary schools and for other purposes. It's crucial that we remember this particularly vile chapter in human history so that we never repeat it. Hate should NEVER be tolerated. Antisemitism should NEVER be tolerated. The Larry Kudlow Show Over the weekend, I join Larry Kudlow to talk about the China Select Committee and my goals for the 118th Congress. Listen to my interview here.  Here’s What I’m Supporting Halt All Lethal Trafficking (HALT) of Fentanyl Act (H.R. 171) - This legislation would classify fentanyl as a Schedule I drug, designating it as an illicit drug with a high risk for abuse and increasing punishment for those who sell it illegally. Fentanyl is tearing families and communities apart, and we must do whatever we can to help law enforcement get them off the streets. The Firearm Industry Non-Discrimination (FIND) Act (H.R. 53) - This bill would prevent the federal government from sending taxpayer funds via federal contracts to businesses that discriminate against the firearm industry. The right to keep and bear arms is a non-negotiable, constitutionally protected right. Therefore, the federal government should not unfairly discriminate against sectors that engage in and advocate for this liberty. H.R. 382 – This bill would terminate the public health emergency declared with respect to COVID-19. American Shores Protection Act (H.R. 583) – This bill would codify the moratorium on oil and gas drilling off the coasts of Florida that was put in place by September 8, 2020, Executive Order by then-President Trump. Under the legislation, the moratorium would apply to the South Atlantic, Eastern Gulf, and Straits of Florida planning areas.  Updates From Agencies IRS: Tax Filing Season – April 18th Deadline The IRS kicked off the 2023 tax filing season this past week, focusing on improving service and a reminder to taxpayers to file electronically with direct deposit to speed up refunds and avoid delays. Taxpayers have until April 18 to file their taxes this year, but some taxpayers living overseas and disaster victims may have later filing deadlines. Alabama, California, and Georgia storm victims now have until May 15 to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. At the beginning of this year, the constituent was concerned with a statement received reflecting the number of payments the Defense Finance and Accounting Services (DFAS) said were made to the SBP and requested an audit for their account. After making this request three times without a response, the constituent contacted my office. As a result, we worked with DFAS to complete the audit that addressed the constituent’s concerns.
