Verily, for the first 300 years after Yeshua's birth, there was still no celebration of a Christmas. Neither Yeshua’s Jewish disciples nor the Gentile followers in the first and second centuries celebrated the birth of Yeshua. And there is no extra-Biblical evidence supporting the existence of this celebration in the writings of the early Church fathers, such as Irenaeus (c. 130–200) or Tertullian (c. 160–225). Actually, Origen of Alexandria (c. 165–264) writes against following any pagan practices celebrated by the Romans. Charles Spurgeon, a respected Baptist preacher and theologian of the 19th century, condemned Christmas as a pagan holiday. Regarding not the day, let us, nevertheless, give God thanks for the gift of His dear son. The birth of the Messiah to Miryam (Mary), a virgin, was miraculous as was the life that Yeshua lived!

On January 21, a confluence of worlds will take place when a lunar eclipse passes over Washington D.C. on the Jewish holiday of Tu B’Shevat (the 15th day of the Hebrew month Shevat): the arboreal New Year. It is expected that this eclipse will have the proper conditions to create a blood moon in which the moon has a distinctly reddish tint. If so, this blood moon will be a supermoon, which occurs when the moon is at its perigee, the point in its month-long elliptical orbit brings it closest to Earth. At that time, the moon appears up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than at its apogee, its furthest point from Earth.
This upcoming blood moon will bring together heaven and earth as the eclipse coincides with the Jewish holiday of Tu B’Shevat (the 15th day of the Hebrew month Shevat), the arboreal New Year and the second anniversary of Donald Trump’s inauguration as President.

When one looks at the mystery of Mary from the perspective of any of her great dogmas – the Immaculate Conception, her Perpetual Virginity, her predestined privilege to be the Mother of God and even her Assumption into Heaven – they all revolve around the mystery of the Annunciation. Sitting in the courtyard of the Church of the Visitation in Ein Karem, Israel, I was overwhelmed with the beautiful display of sixty-seven mosaics containing the words of Luke 1:46-55 in as many languages. Traditionally known as the Magnificat from the Latin “to magnify,” these verses are Mary’s joyous response to the announcement that she will be the mother of the Messiah.
Each plaque contains Mary’s words, including: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. . . . For the Mighty One has done great things for me” (vv. 46-49). The biblical hymn etched in the tiles is a song of praise as Mary recounts the faithfulness of God to her and the nation of Israel.
A grateful recipient of God’s grace, Mary rejoices in her salvation (v. 47). She acknowledges that God’s mercy has extended to the Israelites for generations (v. 50). Looking back over God’s care for the Israelites, Mary praises God for His powerful acts on behalf of His people (v. 51). She also thanks God, recognizing that her daily provision comes from His hand (v. 53).
Mary shows us that recounting the great things God has done for us is a way to express praise and can lead us to rejoice. This Christmas season, consider God’s goodness as you reflect on the year. In doing so, you may create a mosaic of great beauty with your words of praise.
