Massive security preparations under way for inauguration, amid protest threats to 'paralyze' DC
by Joseph Weber
The stage is set for President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration – not just the traditional swearing-in platform on Capitol Hill, but a massive security presence amid protest plans to “shut down” the nation’s capital. ... “Security is my greatest concern,” Missouri GOP Sen. Roy Blunt, chairman of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, recently said. “No question that on inaugural day, this would be the most appealing target in the world.” He suggested the city could have as many as 750,000 demonstrators alone. More than three-dozen law enforcement agencies are working together on security and safety plans in anticipation, including the Capitol Police, FBI, Secret Service and National Guard. Roughly 7,500 Guardsmen from across the country will come to Washington, along with about 3,000 police officers from various states, with the Secret Service taking the lead on security. [...]

Trump vs. 'lying, disgusting' media:
Espionage laws could mean trouble for journalists under the new president.
by Gabriel Schoenfeld
" I would never kill them, but I do hate them. And some of them are such lying, disgusting people.” Thus spoke Donald Trump about journalists at one of his campaign rallies. He was slightly warmer Wednesday at his first news conference as president-elect, referring to some “very dishonest people” in front of him as “fake news” purveyors — his characterization of CNN and Buzzfeed reporting on allegations that Russia had been collecting compromising financial and personal information on Trump for years. It’s reassuring that Trump has promised not to kill journalists. But would he throw them in jail? During the campaign, Trump promised to “open up” libel laws so that when journalists “write purposely negative and horrible and false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money.” There are, however, no federal defamation laws to open up. But there are statutes concerning the publication of national security secrets that, employed aggressively, could cripple American journalism. [...]
Trump invokes 'fake news' at press conference
w vid by Mike Snider - USA TODAY
President-elect Donald Trump brought his campaign against what he considers fake news to his first major press conference since winning the election. What played out could suggest contentious times ahead for mainstream media outlets while covering the incoming administration. At one point, the president-elect shouted down CNN reporter Jim Acosta, labeling the cable news network as “fake news” for its report that U.S. intelligence agencies had briefed the incoming president and President Obama with allegations that Russian operatives claim to have potentially compromising personal and financial information about Trump. Getting worse criticism was BuzzFeed, which published the 35-page classified document on its site as part of its coverage. Trump described the classified report as “false and fake and never happened” and called BuzzFeed a “failing pile of garbage. Writing it, I think they are going to suffer the consequences.” [...]
President-elect blisters ‘fake news’ coverage
Wide-ranging news conference finds Trump confident, combative and optimistic
w vids/pix by David Jackson and Gregory Korte - USA TODAY
NEW YORK - President-elect Donald Trump denounced a purported Russian intelligence report on him as “fake news” Wednesday and asserted that he would be tough on Vladimir Putin despite reports that the Russian president used a computer hacking campaign to try to get him elected. “It’s all fake news. It’s phony stuff. It didn’t happen,” he said. “I read what was released, and I think it’s a disgrace. It’s an absolute disgrace.” Trump spoke to more than 250 journalists in the lobby of Trump Tower on Wednesday in the first full news conference since his election as president. As reporters in the packed lobby vied to ask questions, Trump was by turns assertive and defiant, often taking shots at news coverage. Things turned testy when CNN failed to get Trump to answer a question. “Your organization is terrible,” he told CNN’s Jim Acosta. “You are fake news.” In a wide-ranging, 58-minute news conference, Trump outlined his plans to repeal the Affordable Care Act and replace it with a new health insurance law “almost simultaneously.” He reiterated his plan to have Mexico reimburse the United States for the cost of building a border wall. His attorney outlined plans for Trump to remove himself from the day-to-day operations of his real estate empire, even while maintaining ownership and having family members run it. [...]

Abducted teachers appeal to Donald Trump in Taliban video
w vid by Doug Stanglin - USA TODAY
Two teachers — an American and an Australian — appear in a Taliban video Wednesday for the first time since their abduction in Kabul five months ago to appeal to President-elect Donald Trump to negotiate their release, saying they will be killed if they are not freed soon. It was the first time the two men, identified as Kevin King, and Timothy Weekes, have been seen since their kidnapping outside American University in the Afghan capital in August. U.S. officials said in September that U.S. forces launched a rescue mission on their behalf, but the captives weren’t at the target location, the Associated Press reports. [...]
Flooded California residents rescued as major storms recede
Lorin Doeleman uses a kayak to check her flooded home on Wednesday in Guerneville, Calif. She is moving her belongings to her Sacramento home. Parts of California’s wine country were among the hardest hit, with up to 13 inches of rain over three days that flooded vineyards. The widespread rain and snowfall that prompted a rare blizzard warning in parts of the Sierra is helping much of Northern California recover from a six-year drought.

Secret Behind Dems’ Sudden Concern For Cybersecurity
by Lt. Colonel James G. Zumwalt, USMC (RET)
Just as important as knowing whether Vladimir Putin interfered with the 2016 U.S. presidential election is knowing, if so, why he favored Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton. As to interference, a jury applying the standard of proof used in U.S. courtrooms on criminal matters – i.e., guilt beyond a reasonable doubt – would be hard-pressed to find sufficient evidence supporting such a claim. Despite interference allegations made by unnamed CIA sources and despite WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange, who released DNC emails, denying Moscow had provided them to him, there is “not a single shred of actual evidence” yet to support these claims. In fact, Putin challenges the U.S. to produce evidence of same. (Even the Director of National Intelligence office overseeing all U.S. intelligence agencies acknowledges the CIA cannot prove Russian intentions.) [...]

The nation's top intel chief called President-elect Donald Trump Wednesday to personally deny leaking to the media a dubious dossier of allegations about sensitive information the Russians supposedly had about him. Thousands of US troops on Russia's doorstep in Poland deployment
Thousands of U.S. troops crept up on Russia's doorstep Thursday, rolling into Poland with a slew of unanswered questions about their future in the region. It marked the first deployment of armored brigade combat teams and armor to Europe after a long drawdown from the continent. For decades, Poland had asked for help in keeping Moscow at bay, but at the same time, President-elect Donald Trump has signaled he could try to pursue a friendly relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Senate plans marathon session to kick off Obamacare repeal
Resolution would put scrapping law on fast track
Obamacare takes first real step closer to repeal after Senate vote
w vid by Erin Kelly - USA TODAY
WASHINGTON - After debating seven hours through the night, the Senate voted early Thursday to take the first real step toward repealing Obamacare — a top goal of congressional Republicans and President-elect Donald Trump. Senators voted 51-48 to approve a budget resolution that Republicans will use as a vehicle to speed through repeal of the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare. House leaders plan to take it up Friday. Senators began voting on 19 amendments to the resolution about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday before passing the budget measure about 1:30 a.m. Thursday. Republicans said the 2010 health care law is broken and must be repealed and replaced with something better — although just what that replacement plan will look like has not yet been revealed by congressional leaders. Critics of the law cite sky-rocketing premiums, high deductibles and fewer health care choices for patients as insurers pull out of the program. [...]
Immigrant ‘sanctuary cities’ prepare for Trump onslaught
Trump can punish 'sanctuary cities' that protect undocumented immigrants
w vid/chart by Alan Gomez - USA TODAY
Donald Trump, with a little help from Congress, will have broad presidential powers to crack down on “sanctuary cities” that protect undocumented immigrants from his planned roundup and deportation of millions who are in the country illegally. In what could become a major conflict between the new president and local governments, the showdown probably will result in legal challenges testing how far the White House can go in dictating its priorities. Trump will be armed with a range of powerful options, including federal lawsuits and the power to withhold hundreds of millions of dollars in grants that states and cities rely on. “The Trump administration can largely get the results it is seeking and a real meaningful end to most of these sanctuary policies through a combination of carrots and sticks,” said Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies, who has advised the Trump transition team on its immigration enforcement options. “The point is not to go around whacking all these little cities and counties, it’s to get them to do the right thing. And for the die-hards, to confront them.” [...]

PETITION: President-elect Trump - Commit to Glass-Steagall by State of the Union
Open Letter to President Donald Trump and to all members of Congress: January, 2017
We the undersigned strongly feel the need for protecting our economy from another unnecessary market crash and recession like the one experienced in December of 2007. As you take office, the conditions for a collapse are too similar to those of 2007: rising asset values together with a lack of separation between FDIC insured banking and risk-investment brokering.
We applaud President Trump’s campaign statement in Charlotte, North Carolina, October 26, 2016, endorsing a call for "A 21st Century version of Glass-Steagall," and reintroducing a modern day Glass-Steagall Act. We trust that you understand that stabilizing the business climate and securing the assets as separate from Wall Street speculation is a key to prosperity during your administration.
To set the tone of discourse in Congress 2017, we ask that President Trump restate his support for a Glass-Steagall Act during the State of the Union address.
Be assured in doing so, you will find common ground with both the Republicans and the Democrats since both party platforms have the support of banking legislation that separates insured accounts from Wall Street speculation in their respective platforms.
Thank you for responding to the call from citizens, businesspersons, bankers and legislators as we move forward.
WE URGE THAT THE GLASS-STEAGALL LEGISLATION BE PASSED BY BOTH THE HOUSE AND SENATE OF THE U.S. CONGRESS, AND SIGNED INTO LAW BY INCOMING PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP. WE ALSO ASK THAT THE ENTIRE FOUR LAWS OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ALSO BE IMPLEMENTED DURING THE FIRST 100 DAYS.
