Hutchison’s Real
Record on Gun Rights
"Watch
what we do, not what we say,” was the infamous advice President Richard
Nixon’s first attorney general, John Mitchell, gave to the press way
back in 1969. After all, talk is cheap.
That same advice should be heeded by Republican primary voters when it comes to lieutenant governor candidate Mark Hutchison.
As
with so many other issues – especially his embrace of ObamaCare and
almost gleeful embrace of tax hikes in last year’s legislative session –
Sen. Hutchison’s record on gun rights doesn’t even come close to his
rhetoric.
For example, as painfully detailed by rape survivor Amanda Collins in a letter on
my behalf, Sen. Hutchison refused to co-sponsor a “campus carry” bill
last session that almost every other Republican legislator signed onto.
He
said had to check with Minority Leader Michael Roberson first, and
listen to the arguments against the bill from the likes of Michael
Bloomberg’s anti-gun organization.
That was outrageous and unforgivable. But now consider this…
As
you may recall, back in 2012 President Barack Obama nominated and Sen.
Harry Reid championed the appointment of Elissa Cadish to the U.S.
District Court for the District of Nevada. After the nomination, it was
discovered how hostile Judge Cadish was on gun rights.
In
a 2008 campaign questionnaire from Citizens for Responsible Government
when she was running for judge, Cadish was asked, “Do you believe the
individual citizen has a constitutional right to keep and bear arms?”
“I
do not believe there is this constitutional right,” she wrote in
response. “Thus, I believe that reasonable restrictions may be imposed
on gun ownership in the interest of public safety.”
Wow.
Fortunately,
Nevada Sen. Dean Heller issued a “blue slip” and single-handedly
blocked Cadish’s nomination to the federal bench; what would have been a
lifetime appointment and a lifetime of potential anti-gun rights
decisions.
Now here’s the kicker…
In
the same year that Cadish said she didn't believe there was a
constitutional right to keep and bear arms and voiced support for gun
rights restrictions, guess whose law firm kicked in $1,000 for her
election?
Yep, Hutchison & Steffen LLC!
But that’s not all.
Guess whose law firm also donated $1,598.28 worth of free “in kind” services to Judge Cadish’s election?
Right again, Hutchison & Steffen LLC!
So
the next time you hear Mark Hutchison shooting off his mouth about
being a staunch Second Amendment supporter, you’ll know he’s really just
shooting blanks.
