Crimea, Ukraine and the Agony of Impotence
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently compared actions by Russian President Vladimir Putin in Ukraine to those of Adolf Hitler in 1938 in Czechoslovakia. Although this is hyperbole bordering on veritable absurdity, there are similarities that may explain the roots of the current conflict. In both instances the seeds of despair were planted about twenty years earlier by reckless politicians who drew maps of new countries with flagrant disregard to people’s culture, religion and language. Operating Engineers Union Shovels $165,000 to Ohio Republicans
Last year Ohio Republicans received $165,450 from International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 18, whose campaign against Right to Work has demonized workplace freedom as poisonous and communist.
IUOE Local 18 gave $12,000 — the union’s largest campaign contribution all year — to Governor John Kasich. Unlike Ohio’s other big labor unions, IUOE Local 18 contributed nothing to Ed FitzGerald, Kasich’s Democrat opponent. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
McConnell Prepared to Cut Backroom Deal on IMF Bailout
Yesterday, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee passed a bill to authorize loan guarantees for Ukraine, similar to the bill that passed the House last week. The loan guarantee bill doesn’t directly increase spending; rather it adds Ukraine to the list of countries eligible for Economic Support Fund (ESF) grants. ESF grants have already been appropriated and are used as “walking around cash” for the State Department to send to allied countries in need of assistance (although the money often goes elsewhere). However, the bill does transfer extra funds into the Treasury in order to cover any potential default on the loan. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
