WHAT IF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN AND NOBODY CARED? PART II
This is Part II of watching the great nonevent of 2013 –
the Federal Government Shutdown. In my September 30th column I stated,
“It is time to put the so-called ‘shutdown’ in perspective. The funding
for important government functions will be funded. The public was told
that the sky would fall if the recent ‘Sequester’ occurred. The
sequester is in place and the country is in better shape having reduced
mostly unnecessary spending. Maybe the country needs to have this
shutdown to understand how bloated our government has become.”Well we are now nine days into the federal government shutdown and 83% of government workers are still working. So how can a 17% shutdown be a shutdown?
The only crisis is that which is created inside the Washington, D.C. beltway ...
SALON.COM GETS IT WRONG ON THOMAS JEFFERSON’S QURAN AND ISLAM
Denise Speelberg in her column “Our Founding Fathers
included Islam” states, “Thomas Jefferson didn’t just own a Quran — he
engaged with Islam and fought to ensure the rights of Muslims.” The
basis of Speelberg’s column is Thomas Jefferson quoting “A Letter
Concerning Toleration” by John Locke who in 1689 wrote, “Nay, if we may
openly speak the truth, and as becomes one man to another, neither Pagan
nor Mahometan, nor Jew, ought to be excluded from the civil rights of
the commonwealth because of his religion.”
Note that Locke groups “Pagan and Mahometan” together.
Locke is speaking about civil (legal) rights in England and the
Commonwealth ...

of Florida a bone regarding implementation of Common Core State
Standards (CCSS) leading many to believe he was going to “shut down”
implementation of CCSS via his Executive Order Number 13-276. However
some are questioning if the EO has any teeth.Governor Scott issues an Executive Order and uninformed citizens believe he is stopping CCSS in Florida. What he did was withdraw Florida from the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) only. He stated he was going to hold three hearings for public comments, look into finding someone else for testing and acknowledged concerns regarding the Federal overreach and the data collection of psychological attitudes and beliefs.
Bottom line: The implementation of Common Core State Standards is untouched, unaffected and on track ...

GOVERNOR SCOTT’S NEWEST STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION APPOINTEE COMES UNDER SCRUTINY
Governor Rick Scott is replacing Kathleen Shanahan on the
Florida Board of Education (FLBOE). Shanahan’s term ends on December
31, 2013. Some believe Scott is doing this because Shanahan criticized
Scott for the fact he did not attend his own Education Summit on Common
Core, the FCAT and school grading. Shanahan has been highly critical of
the Governor and the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE). Shanahan
accused Governor Scott of “circumventing the FLBOE”.Governor Scott is replacing Shanahan with Rebecca Fishman Lipsey …
