Excerpts
from the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s “Political
Eye” column by Sean Whaley on Monday…
Assemblyman Randy Kirner, R-Reno, may have incurred the wrath of conservative GOP activist Chuck Muth for his votes on taxes, but he still has a few friends, as a recent fundraising missive shows. An invitation for a Nov. 5 event sponsored by “Women for Kirner” includes an impressive list of Nevadans backing the two-term lawmaker’s campaign for another term. The hosts include former first lady Dawn Gibbons, former first lady Dema Guinn, former Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt-Bono, Assemblywoman Michele Fiore and Dale Raggio, the wife of the late state Sen. Bill Raggio, among about 80 other notable Nevada women.Kirner has a primary opponent, Lisa Krasner, who describes herself as a community activist, former Reno city parks commissioner and instructor at both the University of Phoenix and Truckee Meadows College. Krasner has the backing of former Gov. Jim Gibbons, who authored the constitutional amendment requiring a two-thirds vote in the Legislature to raise taxes.
Kirner is one of several Republican state lawmakers expected to face anti-tax primary opponents because of their votes in the 2013 session.Muth, who is a strong anti-tax advocate, has criticized Kirner for his support of a bill in the 2013 Legislature that gave the Washoe County Commission the authority to raise the sales tax to help rehabilitate older Washoe County schools. The bill passed without a two-thirds vote requirement since it punted the decision on whether to enact the tax hike to the county commission.
Mr.
Whaley, of course, is referring to the Kirner Tax, the father of which is
Assemblyman Randy Kirner (R-Kirner
Tax) who doesn’t like you calling the Kirner Tax the Kirner Tax and would
prefer you not go to http://www.KirnerTax.com
or send anyone else there. #KirnerTax
BILBRAY-KOHN SWINGS AT
HECK BUT HITS MANENDO
Democrat
congressional candidate Erin
Bilbray-Kohn has been beating up on her opponent, Rep. Joe Heck (R-Nevada) for supposedly not voting for a women’s rape
center and domestic violence program.
Heck
is “no advocate for women’s equality, choice, or health,” Bilbray-Kohn said in
an interview with the Las Vegas Sun, saying his voting record is “very
anti-choice, very anti-woman.”
But
Citizen Outreach CEO Dan Burdish says
the problem with this misleading attack is that those two programs totaled just
$450,000 out of a $9.9 million pork bill…a bill that Democrat Nevada State Sen.
Mark Manendo also voted against!
Does
this mean Sen. Manendo is “no advocate for women’s equality, choice, or health”
and is “very anti-choice, very anti-woman”?
And does this mean Mrs. Bilbray-Kohn will be opposing her fellow
Democrat when he runs for re-election next year?
Inquiring
minds wanna know.

FREE MARKET SUGAR
Apples to Apples, Sugar to Sugar - According
to figures compiled by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the
wholesale cost of sugar refined in the United States in October of 1980 – the
month before Ronald Reagan was elected president – was 51.77 cents per pound.
That
same pound of refined U.S. sugar in August 2013 – the latest month for which
figures are available – was 25.50 cents per pound.
Is
anyone out there buying cakes, cookies, candy bars or ice cream cones for half
what they paid 33 years ago? I didn’t think so.

STOP PATENT TROLLS
The
International Trolling Commission - A 10-year legislative effort
to modernize our patent system culminated with the passage of The America
Invents Act of 2010. But when the law went into effect, it became clear how
little it did to prevent so-called patent trolls from continuing to exploit the
system.
Now
reform is gaining momentum again in Washington, giving Congress and the White
House a chance to get it right. For worthwhile reform, both parties need to
recognize the flagrant abuses happening not only in courts but also at the
International Trade Commission.
The
core problem is patent trolls, which are typically entities set up for the sole
purpose of holding U.S. patents, with no intention of ever using the patents to
produce anything. Instead, they aggressively pursue legal action against
companies that do make products. Patent trolls have a simple scheme: accuse
companies of violating their patent, threaten them with costly court
proceedings, and profit by forcing monetary settlements. Patent trolls file
thousands of these lawsuits every year.

“Chuck, you really shouldn't pick on Jon Ralston. He may be a dick (actually, he IS a dick) and he may be an idiot (actually, he is--well, you get the point!), but he can serve a function, which may actually be GOOD for the Nevada GOP.“Several days ago I received an e-mail from Michele Fiore asking me for a $1.00 contribution to help pay the filing fee for Sue Lowden to encourage her to get into the race for Lt. Governor. Frankly, I was going to blow it off -- right up until I read in one of your daily e-mails about Ralston dumping on Sue Lowden!“After reading that, I managed to recover Michele's e-mail, and responded, as she had requested, "Count me in!" I also told her the exact reason WHY I had changed my mind, and not long afterward received an e-mail back from her acknowledging that Ralston may, indeed, be one of the Nevada GOP's biggest fundraisers in the 2014 elections! I think she might just be right!”

FAMOUS LAST WORDS
“The
state of California is a mess, and the super-majority of Democrats is not
working. I’ve been a lifelong Democrat
and I have to switch over because it no longer serves the people of this great
state. We need to have a new voice. We need to have a new direction, and we
need to break the supermajority. It isn’t helping with jobs. The last time I made a movie in California was
seven years ago. And that’s because
we’re not being competitive.” – Democrat-turned-Republican actor/comedian
