Must Read: The Indebted States of America: States and localities owe
far, far more than their citizens know. By Steven Malanga
Excerpt: Maria Pappas, the treasurer of Cook County, Illinois,
got tired of being asked why local taxes kept rising. Betting that the answer
involved the debt that state and local governments were accumulating, she began
a quest to figure out how much county residents owed. It wasn’t easy. In some
jurisdictions, officials said that they didn’t know; in others, they
stonewalled. Pappas’s first report, issued in 2010, estimated the total state
and local debt at $56 billion for the county’s 5.6 million residents. Two years
later, after further investigation, the figure had risen to a frightening $140
billion, shocking residents and officials alike. (The collapse is coming. http://tiny.cc/g02s4 ~Bob.)
Did Taxes Cause
the Financial Crisis?. By Mark Roe
Excerpt: But consider another way of viewing
the crisis and our financial institutions: the financial system was never
all that far from the cliff’s edge, even before 2008, because the tax system
encouraged financial firms to overload themselves with debt. … The added risks
pushed the financial system past the tipping point, but the baseline problem
was that it always contained too much risky debt. … Mark Roe, a professor at Harvard Law School,
is an expert on securities law and financial markets. (Guess Obama didn’t take
his course. ~Bob)
Harvard Study: No
Correlation Between Gun Control and Less Violent Crime. By Ayr
Hawkins
Excerpt: A Harvard Study titled
"Would Banning
Firearms Reduce Murder and Suicide?" looks at figures for
"intentional deaths" throughout continental Europe and juxtaposes
them with the U.S.
to show that more gun control does not necessarily lead to lower death rates or
violent crime. Because the findings so clearly demonstrate that more gun
laws may in fact increase death rates, the study says that "the mantra
that more guns mean more deaths and that fewer guns, therefore, mean fewer
deaths" is wrong. (Huh. Who would have guessed? Unless you live in, say, Chicago. ~Bob.)

Obama Gets His War On & Miley Cyrus. By Daniel Greenfield
Excerpt: Yesterday the media was too busy drowning the
country in the spectacle of the antics of a former Disney starlet at the Video
Music Awards for a cable channel that no longer does music videos to report on
the antics of a former community organizer who was busy sketching out plans for
an illegal war that he had been on record as opposing. (I'm just curious... is Obama trying to build a
coalition of like-minded countries, trying to get approval from the UN, and
getting a vote from congress, before going to war in Syria [like Bush did
before we went into Iraq], or is he simply going to drag the country into someone
else's civil war unilaterally? --LLW)
Excerpt: ran and the terrorist group Hezbollah, which together

their position in the entire Middle East is
badly weakened — and ours is strengthened.

Good Column: Congress Should Veto Obama’s War. By
Patrick J. Buchanan
Excerpt: “Congress doesn’t have a whole lot of core
responsibilities,” said Barack Obama last week in an astonishing remark. For in
the Constitution, Congress appears as the first branch of government. And among
its enumerated powers are the power to tax, coin money, create courts, provide
for the common defense, raise and support an army, maintain a navy and declare
war. But, then, perhaps Obama’s contempt is justified.
Mythbusting the Looming

Excerpt: Really, any sort of Western response to the

Syria will require more than cruise missiles. By
Eliot A. Cohen
Excerpt: In 1994, after directing the U.S. Air Force's
official study of the Persian Gulf War, I concluded, "Air power is an
unusually seductive form of military strength, in part because, like modern
courtship, it appears to offer gratification without commitment." That
observation stands. It explains the Obama administration's enthusiasm for a
massive, drone-led assassination campaign against al-Qaida terrorists. And it
applies with particular force to a prospective, U.S.-led attack on the Syrian
government in response to its use of chemical weapons against a civilian
population.
Credibility over 'red
lines' no reason for war. By Benjamin H. Friedman
Excerpt: Historical studies show that foreigners do not
assess U.S.
willingness to intervene based on whether they carried out past threats. They
focus, instead, on the local balance of military power and U.S. interests
in their case. And leaders clinging to power are especially unlikely to care
what we threaten to convince them to surrender it.
Outsiders have no
tools to fix Syria.
By Christopher A. Preble
Excerpt: The deeply dysfunctional Syrian state is not
something outsiders have the tools to repair. Cruise missiles launched from
ships and submarines won’t persuade the divided Syrian opposition to unite
around a common goal, nor are they likely to cause President Bashar Assad’s
supporters to capitulate and throw in their lot with the rebels. But such
strikes will result in additional death and destruction on the ground.

“monkey with a hand grenade,” according to a report by Russian news agency, Ria
Novosti. His short statement was communicated in the Russian

information that apparently convinced the U.S. that the forces of Bashar
al-Assad were indeed behind the chemical attack a week ago that killed hundreds
of civilians. (It’s all in the spin. Can you believe Hagel? Or others who do

Antiwar Left Stays Quiet On Syria:
With less money and fewer members, antiwar groups struggle to effectively
protest the imminent war in Syria.
By Rosie Gray
Excerpt: Activists who turned out thousands of protesters
during the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq say they’ve been unable to
effectively organize or raise money since the end of the Bush years, and that
newer causes like drones have seized the space on the left once occupied by
opposition to conventional warfare. And
some acknowledge that the energy has leaked out of the movement because a

Excerpt: The terrorists who helped execute the Benghazi attacks

Excerpt: Ask almost any employer and there won’t be much
doubt: the Affordable Care Act is likely to raise the cost of labor, discourage
hiring and have a negative effect on the economy.
Some economists are pushing back, however. In 2011, David Cutler of Harvard testified
that the Affordable Care Act would reduce average health care costs by about 5
percent by 2015. That would decrease the cost of labor for employers and increase
nationwide employment. Cutler also organized and signed an economists’
letter to Congress asserting that “repealing the Affordable Care Act
would produce job reductions of 250,000 to 400,000 annually.” But how much of
this push back is just politics, as opposed to real economics? Although Cutler
is an able health economist, he’s not an expert in labor economics. Someone who
is at the top of that field is University of Chicago economist Casey
Mulligan, who took Cutler to task for ignoring all of the ways in which
ObamaCare discourages hiring, discourages full time employment and discourages
businesses from becoming large rather than small.

King’s 1963 speech, FBI began spying on civil rights leader
Excerpt: Initially approved in October 1963 by then-Attorney
General Robert F. Kennedy, the FBI’s wiretap and clandestine microphone
campaign against King lasted until his assassination in April 1968. It was
initially justified to probe King’s suspected, unproven links to the Communist
Party, morphing into a crusade to “neutralize” and discredit the civil rights
leader. … Robert F. Kennedy that
month approved the installation of wiretaps on King’s phone and those at the New York and Atlanta
offices of the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference, ostensibly to look into any communist ties. (Well,

Excerpt: Today Barack Obama will limo over to the Lincoln
Memorial to deliver a speech in honor of the 50th Anniversary of Martin Luther
King's "I have a dream" speech. In his speech Obama will reluctantly
admit that progress has been made since that speech, then he'll begin hammering
"The Great Whitey" for not giving out more "federal gravy"
for welfare, food stamps, WIC, Section 8 housing, and more preferential quotas
for education and employment. He will bemoan "Whitey's" sin of a 30%
Black employment rate, and, totally ignoring a month long rash of Blacks
beating Whites to death across our nation, he'll shame Whites for clicking door
locks when Black hoodies cross the street. Here's some of the things you won't

The Street Sweeper. By Erick Erickson
Excerpt: It is a speech no leader in America on a stage such as he
commanded would ever think to give. It is a speech about individuals being the
best they can be as the beginning of their way in life and finding God as the
end. King’s “Street Sweeper” speech, which is more properly called “The
Three Dimensions of a Complete Life” was a variation of a theme he went back
and forth to over the years. He gave this particular speech to New Covenant Baptist Church
in Chicago, IL, on April 9, 1967.
Obama: Back to the Racist Future. By Arnold Ahlert
Excerpt: Despite these and other incidents, President Obama,

Jarrett sees

Valerie Jarrett, one of President Barack Obama’s top

slurs. (She’s white. Only attacks on blacks are racially motivated. ~Bob.)

The Beam in Thine Own
Eye. By Mark Steyn
Excerpt: A New Jersey
group called “American Atheists” is threatening to sue the town of Princeton over a 9/11 memorial that includes a beam recovered from the World Trade Center with a cross cut into it.
It would be “grossly offensive and alienating,” says attorney Bruce Affran.
Colorado's Grassroots Revolt Against Gun-Grabbers.
By Michelle Malkin
Excerpt: On September 10, Democratic legislator and
state Senate President John Morse of Colorado Springs
faces a citizen recall for his sellout to New York anti-gun special interests, for his
betrayal of transparency and accountability to constituents, and for his
destructive economic policies that are driving thousands of jobs away.
Imagine that Russia had colonized America. By Daniel Hannan
Excerpt: From the seventeenth century onwards, Cossack
soldiers surged east across the steppes like a Golden Horde in reverse,
tellingly using the Tatar word ‘yasak’ for the tribute they exacted from the
natives. Not that there was anything innocent about the autochthonous
Siberians, who engaged in the violence, slavery and brutality common to most
primitive peoples (unfashionable though it is to say so these days). One
Aleutian tribe, to pluck an example more or less at random, kept a special
caste of boys raised as girls for the sexual gratification of its chiefs.
Wind farms are a
breach of human rights says the United Nations. No, really. By James Delingpole
Excerpt: Yes, I thought "too good to be true" too.
But even the wise Richard North
appears to think the story has legs. As too does one expert
lawyer: Says David Hart, QC, an environmental lawyer, "This ruling
means that consents and permissions for further wind-farm developments in
Scotland and the UK are liable to challenge on the grounds that the necessary
policy preliminaries have not been complied with, and that, in effect, the
public has been denied the chance to consider and contribute to the
NREAP".

Huffington Post
Contributor Suggests Conservative Dana Loesch Should Be Raped. By Katie Pavlich
Excerpt: Leave it to a progressive male to publicly promote
the rape of conservative radio host, activist, wife
and mother Dana Loesch. Late last night, in response to a tweet from Loesch
about gun control, Huffington Post contributor Pascal Robert told her she
should be raped and described a sick sexual fantasy.
Only white attackers of blacks can be identified by race.

Ayn Rand - Southern
Racists & the Civil Rights Movement
Excerpt: The Southern racists’ claim of “states’ rights” is
a contradiction in terms: there can be no such thing as the “right” of
some men to violate the rights of others. The constitutional concept of
“states’ rights” pertains to the division of power between local and national
authorities, and serves to protect the states from the Federal government; it
does not grant to a state government an unlimited, arbitrary power over its
citizens or the privilege of abrogating the citizens’ individual rights.
For Long-Shot New Jersey Senate
Candidate, Passion and No Filter. By Kate Zernike
Excerpt: Even if Mr. Lonegan were not running against a
nationally known Democrat, his campaign to be the first Republican in 40 years
elected to the United States Senate from New
Jersey would be a long shot. But he has no intention
of letting it be dull. The election to replace Senator Frank R. Lautenberg, who
died in June, presents a stark contrast: Mr. Booker, the mayor of the state’s
largest city, invites comparisons to President Obama; Mr. Lonegan, a former
mayor of suburban Bogota, N.J.,
intends to go to Washington
and dismantle the Obama agenda.
Excerpt: Senator Tim Scott of South
Carolina wasn’t invited to speak at the events today commemorating
the fiftieth anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington, although several
African-American Democrats were.
Martyrs, Virgins and
Grapes. By Nicholas D. Kristof
Excerpt: For example, the Koran says martyrs going to heaven
will get ''hur,'' and the word was taken by early commentators to mean
''virgins,'' hence those 72 consorts. But in Aramaic, hur meant ''white'' and
was commonly used to mean ''white grapes.'' Some martyrs arriving in paradise
may regard a bunch of grapes as a letdown.
Somali Immigrants
Charged With Illegal Double Voting in Minnesota.
Posted by Christian Adams
Excerpt: About 50 men and women packed a Rice County
courtroom Tuesdayafternoon as two Somali women pleaded not guilty to
charges of voter fraud stemming from the general election last
November. Farhiya Abdi Dool, 38,
and Amina A Hassan, 31, each face one felony charge of unlawful
voting for voting once by absentee ballot and once at a polling place during
the 2012 general election. Each woman faces five years in prison and a $10,000
fine for the offense.
Chicago or Chiraq?
"I don't wanna say there's no hope man, but I don't know, man" By
Benjy Hansen-Bundy
Excerpt: Things have gotten so bad recently on the streets
of South and West Chicago, Chi-town has earned a new moniker: "Chiraq." But the
city's troubles with gun violence are old news—see our earlier chat with the filmmakers behind The
Interrupters—and we've become desensitized. This gripping new
documentary short, titled Chi Raq, by London-based filmmaker and
photographer Will Robson-Scott is sufficient to shake you from the comfort of
your armchair liberalism and give you a fresh dose of reality as it applies to Chicago's poorest
neighborhoods.
Internal Documents
Reveal How the FBI Blew Fort
Hood. By Mariah Blake
Excerpt: As it turns out, the FBI quietly released the
emails in an unclassified report on the shooting, which was
produced by an investigative commission headed by former FBI director William
H. Webster last year. And, far from being "benign," they offer a chilling glimpse into the psyche of an
Islamic radical. The report also shows how badly the FBI bungled its Hasan
investigation and suggests that the Army psychiatrist's deadly rampage could
have been prevented.
UK: Millions of Migrants Who Don't Even Have
A British Passport Could Decide Next Election. By Alison Little
Excerpt: They could even sway the result of the promised
referendum on Britain’s EU
membership, campaign group MigrationWatch UK warned last night, as it called
for a change in the rules to remove voting rights from non-citizens. Commonwealth
migrants from 54 states including Australia,
Canada, India, Pakistan
and Nigeria can join the
electoral roll on arrival in the UK as long as they have an address
here.
