ICE OFFICIAL: MEXICAN DRUG CARTELS ‘DICTATING’ FLOW OF HUMAN SMUGGLING INTO U.S.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) official Matthew Allen told House lawmakers at a hearing Monday in Arizona that “gatekeepers” linked to Mexican drug cartels “are dictating when and where” alien smugglers are allowed to cross the southwest border into the United States. Allen, the special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations for ICE in Phoenix, added that when human smugglers disregard “warnings” from drug cartels, they then can be targets of violence, including murder. Allen attributes this coordination of illegal border crossing to an effort by Mexican drug cartels to ensure that coyotes and their human cargo do not attract law enforcement attention that could then interfere with cartel activity.
