NEW VISA PROPOSAL COULD OPEN DOOR FOR RAMPANT ABUSE
Rep. Marco Rubio (R-FL) held a press conference last week in Miami to promote the Trafficking Victims Protection Act which, if passed, will grant temporary residency status to victims of sex trafficking. When asked if the measure could result in untold numbers of illegal immigrants simply lying to stay in the country, Rep. Rubio responded, “It’s been a factor” and that there is the concern in Washington that illegal immigrants will exploit this and use it as a loophole to game the system. The bill itself seems unnecessary as there is already a visa program (known as the T Nonimmigrant Status or “T visa”) in place that addresses this concern.
