MUTH'S TRUTHS 05/23/2011

SHARRON ANGLE AGAINST THE WORLD

If you ever wondered why Sharron Angle has almost NEVER won a Republican primary race with more than half of the GOP votes – including her “win” in the U.S. Senate primary last year – the email solicitation she sent out Sunday morning will tell you all you need to know.

This woman has an uncanny knack for insulting, offending and driving away otherwise would-be supporters that is unrivaled. She is, without a doubt, the biggest divider, not uniter, among Republicans in Nevada.  In fact, under the word “polarizing” in the dictionary, there’s a picture of Sharron Angle (ba-da-boom!).

She’s the political equivalent of Russell Crowe: She just wants to fight EVERYBODY, including her own philosophical allies.  She’s like a blind bank robber; you know somebody’s gonna get shot, you just don’t know who.

In her fundraising email, Angle first goes after Ross Miller, the Democrat Nevada Secretary of State; “the same one who said that Harry Reid could bribe voters with food and gift cards.”

First, Miller never said any such thing.  Secondly, even if he did, that’s not why Reid won.  Reid won because Angle and her campaigned sucked eggs…though I’m not sure you need to use the word “eggs.”

Angle then says Miller wants “to make sure Republicans are forced into a bitter multi-candidate special election to make it easier for a Democrat to win.”  Well, um, duh.

But then again, the only real reason Democrats might be able to win a multi-candidate special election is because Sharron Angle would be one of the GOP candidates.  It’s Angle’s presence that creates the potential for a bitter multi-candidate race for Republicans.  A divider, not a uniter.

Angle then redirects her fire at…her own Republican Party.

NEVADA STRAW POLL

Nevada’s GOP Central Committee members – or as Sharron Angle calls them, lackeys – will meet on June 18 in Reno to choose the Republican candidate for the Second Congressional District race for the September 13 special election.  If that decision is based on who is most likely to actually win the race, Angle is likely out.

In seemingly unrelated news, the Nevada GOP presidential caucus will be the third official candidate selection gathering – following Iowa and New Hampshire – next February, which, politically-speaking, is just around the corner. Seems to me the June 18 meeting would be an excellent time to not only choose their congressional candidate, but weigh in on the presidential race, especially now that the field appears to be all but set.

Is Romney running away with the state again?  Has Ron Paul increased his support?  Has Herman Cain’s multiple visits to the Silver State and his debate win in South Carolina gained him any traction?  Do Republican regulars still have a soft spot for Gingrich?  Does anyone seriously think Sarah Palin is going to run?  Will Marcy still marry Justin after catching him with Daisy’s second cousin on her mother’s side?  Inquiring minds wanna know.

Straw poll, Republicans?

HORSFORD IN WONDERLAND

To give you an idea of just how desperate Democrat Senate Minority Leader Steven Horsford is getting as the sands through the legislative hour-glass continue to fall, get a load of this tweet from him last week:

“The Governor's budget, with its deep cuts, is not fiscally conservative. The Margin Tax is a responsible solution, proposed at .8%.”

A budget that cuts spending and doesn’t raise taxes is not “fiscally conservative”?

I guess in Horsford’s Wonderland, “fiscally conservative” means whatever he wants it to mean.  But here in the real world, Gov. Sandoval’s proposed budget is more fiscally conservative than either of the two budgets proposed by former Gov. Gibbons.

To try to “spin” it otherwise is just plain asinine.

A REPREHENSIBLE COMMERCIAL

The Nevada State Education Association (NSEA) television commercial that aired last week features a young boy saying into the camera, “Governor Sandoval, why are you destroying our schools?”  To which public school teacher and author Jim Blockey writes:

“This is a child that may or may not be competent to tie his shoes accusing the chief of Nevada of obliterating our schools.  Truth be told, it is the Teachers Associations that have executed more destruction than any other entity with their social curriculums taking precedence over academics.”

The commercial is, indeed, as Blockey describes it, reprehensible.  Then again, using children as human shields to protect the teachers union from accountability and true, meaningful reform is…well, what they do.  They don’t care about our children; they only care about the union.

Do parents “get” that yet?

RAN’S RUN-AROUND COULD COST NEVADA JOBS

“The Retail Association of Nevada (RAN) proposed an amendment to Senate Bill 34,” to force e-commerce companies to collect and remit Nevada sales taxes on online purchases, reports Ben Spillman of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.  “But a lobbyist for Amazon.com warned the move might force the company to pull its work force out of Nevada, saying it favors a national system to collect sales tax on online purchases.”

Spillman noted that “Amazon would rather collect and remit sales taxes under a uniform, federal system” rather than subject itself to a patchwork of collection systems on a state-by-state basis, which is what the Retail Association is attempting to do this legislative session.

“To avoid complications associated with a state-based system, (Amazon’s lobbyist) said, Amazon would consider moving out of Nevada,” the story continued.  “Amazon operates a warehouse and shipment center that employs about 1,300 people in Fernley.”

Great. Just what Nevada needs: more unemployed Nevadans.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

“Often labeled by critics as a tax-and-spend Democrat, (Las Vegas mayoral candidate Chris) Giunchigliani says she does support tax increases if needed to protect government services and programs.  As an assemblywoman in 2003, Giunchigliani voted for what was then the largest tax increase in Nevada history…  (She) is the only mayoral candidate who said she would be open to higher taxes in Las Vegas.” – Delen Goldberg, Las Vegas Sun, 5/17/11
