The Obama doctrine: Leading from behind

Obama may be moving toward something resembling a doctrine. One of his advisers described the president’s actions in Libya as “leading from behind.”

To be precise, leading from behind is a style, not a doctrine. Doctrines involve ideas, but since there are no discernible ones that make sense of Obama foreign policy — Lizza’s painstaking two-year chronicle shows it to be as ad hoc, erratic and confused as it appears — this will have to do.
And it surely is an accurate description, from President Obama’s shocking passivity during Iran’s 2009 Green Revolution to his dithering on Libya, acting at the very last moment, then handing off to a bickering coalition, yielding the current bloody stalemate. It’s been a foreign policy of hesitation, delay and indecision, marked by plaintive appeals to the (fictional) “international community” to do what only America can.
But underlying that style, assures this Obama adviser, there really are ideas. Indeed, “two unspoken beliefs,” explains Lizza. “That the relative power of the U.S. is declining, as rivals like China rise, and that the U.S. is reviled in many parts of the world.”

COMPARE MILITARY RETIREMENT TO THAT OF CONGRESS

No one has been able to explain to me why young men and women serve in
     the U.S. Military for 20 years, risking their lives protecting freedom,
     and only get 50% of their pay. While Politicians hold their political
     positions in the safe confines of the capital, protected by these same
     men and women, and receive full pay retirement after serving one term. It
     just does not make any sense.

     Monday on Fox news they learned that the staffers of Congress family
     members are exempt from having to pay back student loans. This will get
     national attention if other news networks will broadcast it. When you add
     this to the below, just where will all of it stop?

Took a cab home from a meeting in downtown Chicago late Friday night. The black driver had one of those lilting, African accents, so I asked where he was from. "I am from Nigeria, Sir. But I am a citizen and I have been in this great country 23 years." I mentioned the turmoil in Nigeria and asked if he was from the South or the North. "I am a Christian from southern Nigeria, sir. It is the Muslims in the north who are creating the trouble. I do not know what it is about that religion that it makes so many people want to hate and kill." Me either. But I told him I was glad he was here, and that we need more immigrants like him who wanted to be Americans, not destroy America.

JUST WHO IS SILLY?

Wednesday, during a press conference Barack Obama told Americans he doesn't have time for "silliness" and that and "we've got big problems to solve." But in yet another example of his rhetoric differing from reality, he immediately left the White House and spent the rest of his day filming an interview with Oprah in Chicago and raising an estimated two to three million dollars for his campaign coffers during a series of events in New York City.

I guess the problems he was referring to in his press conference have more to do with his sinking poll numbers and need for extra cash to spend on his reelection, because the silliest solution to our economic crisis is Barack Obama's plan for tax hikes and increased debt.

LAS VEGAS – Real estate developer Donald Trump unleashed a tirade of profanity in a speech at a boisterous Las Vegas casino as he assured a crowd of adoring supporters Thursday night that he is seriously weighing a presidential run and will make a decision soon.

During a 30-minute stump speech focused mostly on foreign affairs, Trump sprinkled in a number of insults directed toward the nation's leaders.

A Republican official, this time a member of the Orange County, Calif., GOP Central Committee, stands accused of – racism!
Her crime?
She forwarded, to a circle of friends, an email depicting an image of a family of chimpanzees, with the superimposed face of President Barack Obama over the baby chimp's face. The caption read, "Now you know why no birth certificate." The national media soon picked up the story with the implicit "GOP-is-bigoted" story line.
Given her position as a central committee member, America's ugly history of demeaning images of blacks and the Democratic Party's unfair but calculated characterization of the Republican Party as racist the official exercised poor taste and bad judgment. She has apologized. But many demand her resignation.
This is a teachable moment.

Debt ceiling: More Democrats threaten to vote against raising borrowing limit

A growing number of Democrats are threatening to defy the White House over the national debt, joining Republican calls for deficit cuts as a requirement for consenting to lift the country’s borrowing limit.
The tension is the latest illustration of how the tea-party-infused GOP is driving the debate in Washington over federal spending. And it shows how the debt issue is testing the Obama administration’s clout as Democrats, particularly those from politically competitive states, resist White House arguments against setting conditions on legislation to raise the debt ceiling.
The push-back has come in recent days from Sens. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), a freshman who is running for reelection next year. Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) told constituents during the Easter recess that he would not vote to lift the debt limit without a “real and meaningful commitment to debt reduction.”

Illegal Immigrants Disregard Laws without Fear

Colorado is among the most tolerant sanctuary states when it comes to illegal immigration. In recent years, such “forgiving” policy has resulted in a rash of fatal accidents caused by illegal immigrations, who in a less tolerant state would have been successfully deported long before others had to die.

Here is just one of the painful results of sanctuary state and city policies:

In January 2011, Norma Paola Vera-Nolasco, 31, was arrested at Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix, as she attempted to flee to Mexico. Her crime? Vera-Nolasko was driving the truck that hit and killed valet, Jose Medina outside a Denver nightclub on January 22. Twenty-one year-old Jose Medina was helping a woman exit her car when he was hit with such force that he was thrown 50 feet into the street.

Vera-Nolasco was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, criminal impersonation, and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. She was drunk at the time of the accident. In 2008, Vera-Nolasco was arrested in Aurora, CO, for driving without a license, but due to Aurora’s sanctuary policy, she was released without being reported to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

SENATOR LINDSEY GRAHAM - PORKER OF THE MONTH!

Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) has named Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) Porker of the Month for threatening to bring the Senate to a standstill over Congress’s failure to fund a $40,000 earmark for a federal study on deepening the port of Charleston. On April 11, Sen. Graham threw a fit, telling reporters that he would “tie the Senate in knots” until the port study money was approved. Unfortunately, the tantrum paid off. Despite Congress’ ongoing earmark moratorium, on April 15 Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) pledged on the Senate floor that he would find funding for the study before the end of fiscal year (FY) 2011. “This project and the study it requires both reek of pork,” declared CAGW President Tom Schatz. “There is absolutely no reason that taxpayers in places like Omaha or Denver should be forced to finance Charleston’s port.” For insisting that federal taxpayers deep-six their dollars into a project that should be funded by the state and the private sector, CAGW named Sen. Tens of millions of Americans filed their taxes last week. But few of them are aware that millions of their tax dollars fund the activities and agenda of a radical, racially-divisive organization that uses those funds against their values.
The National Council of La Raza - literally "The Race" - opposes commonsense immigration enforcement against illegal aliens, or even to secure the borders. They oppose efforts to stop illegal aliens from voting, or receiving driver's licenses, or welfare. Even though more than 75% of Americans disagree with La Raza on those issues, those same taxpayers FUND La Raza's activities - more than $5 million alone in the last year they filed a tax return.
But perhaps the most disturbing activities La Raza engages in is to support racially-divisive charter schools in nearly half the states of our nation. These schools utilize so-called "La Raza Studies", which teach the almost exclusively Hispanic students that American laws and culture are racist, and that the American Southwest was STOLEN from Mexico, and must one day be "reconquered" by Hispanics.

White House officials have been telling reporters in recent days that the Democrat doesn't intend to hang around the White House quite so much in 2011. They explain he wants to get out more around the country because, as everyone knows, that midterm election shellacking on Nov. 2 had nothing to do with his health care bill, over-spending or other policies, and everything to do with Obama's not adequately explaining himself to his countrymen and women.

Back in February 2003, then-Sen. Mark Amodei was asked by reporter Geoff Dornan of the Nevada Appeal about giving state workers the same collectivist bargaining sledgehammer power that local government workers enjoyed over taxpayers. According to Dornan, Amodei “said he supported collective bargaining for state workers four years ago, again two years ago and will support it this year.”

Now that Amodei is no longer a legislator but the GOP party chairman, we can’t help but wonder if his position has changed, especially in light of Republican efforts to not only keep state workers from getting this power, but stripping the locals of it, too. Indeed, the Nevada Republican Party has been awful quiet on this issue this session.

Excerpt: The federal government ran record peacetime budget deficits in fiscal years 2009 and 2010, 10 percent and 9 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), respectively, and anticipated another deficit of 10 percent in 2011. The federal government's borrowing in 2009 and 2010 took up amounts equal to 60 percent and 49 percent of the economy's gross private savings, respectively. The dollar volume of federal debt held by the public doubled between the end of September 2007 and the end of December 2010. The ratio of debt to GDP reached 62 percent, the first time the federal-debt-to-GDP ratio had exceeded 50 percent since just after World War II, says Lawrence H. White, a professor of economics at George Mason University. A large share of the federal debt growth in 2007-2010 was cyclical, due to a deep recession that reduced federal revenues and automatically triggered some additional spending. But a sizable part of the debt growth was non-cyclical or structural, as indicated by the federal budget having been in deficit for 36 out the most recent 40 years. By 2020, debt would equal nearly 90 percent of GDP; after that, the growing imbalance between revenues and noninterest spending, combined with the spiraling cost of interest payments, would swiftly push federal debt to unsustainable levels. Debt held by the public would exceed its historical peak of about 110 percent of GDP by 2025 and would reach about 180 percent of GDP in 2035. A growing level of federal debt would also increase the probability of a sudden fiscal crisis, during which investors would lose confidence in the government's ability to manage its budget, and the government would thereby lose its ability to borrow at affordable rates, says White.

Attorneys General Battle NLRB Over Boeing Plant

Nine state attorneys general sounded off in a letter [1] to the National Labor Relations Board, calling a complaint it filed against Boeing for opening a production facility in South Carolina an assault on their states' economies.
After receiving a complaint from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, the NLRB claims Boeing participated in unfair labor practices by threatening to open new, non-union facilities elsewhere when workers went on strike at the company's Washington state production facility in 2008.
Boeing is slated to open its newest 787 airliner assembly line this summer in South Carolina, a "right-to-work" state, in which employee's can't be forced to join a union to work at unionized plants. In Washington state and the 28 states without "right-to-work" laws, once a majority of workers have opted to join a union, everyone can be required to join and pay dues. That gives labor groups an advantage in organizing.

Wisconsin's Government Accountability Board has begun the tedious task of recounting ballots cast in the state Supreme Court [1] election that saw record turnout earlier this month, but it's the politics behind the first statewide recount in almost 25 years that is an interesting story.
The official vote tally after the April 5 election declared incumbent conservative Justice David Prosser the winner, getting about 7,000 votes more than liberal challenger Joanne Kloppenburg. The recount, which will cost taxpayers about $1 million at a time when the state is struggling financially, is not expected to change anything.
Still Kloppenburg has the right to ask for a recount, and she is. The question is why?

After Republican efforts in Washington to defund Planned Parenthood fizzled this month, several states are now in a race to become the first to strip the organization of all taxpayer money.
Kansas, Indiana, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Texas are among the states who are taking up the fight that the GOP-led House couldn't finish when the White House and the Democratic-controlled Senate risked a government shutdown to protect Planned Parenthood from Republican knives.

Most Americans say U.S. in recession despite data: poll

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - More than half of Americans say the U.S. economy is in a recession or a depression despite official data that show a moderate recovery, according to a poll released on Thursday.The April 20-23 Gallup survey of 1,013 U.S. adults found that only 27 percent said the economy is growing. Twenty-nine percent said the economy is in a depression and 26 percent said it is in a recession, with another 16 percent saying it is "slowing down," Gallup said.
The poll findings have a 4 percentage point margin of error, according to Gallup.
The health of the U.S. economy is expected to be a major issue as President Barack Obama, a Democrat, seeks re-election in 2012.

President Obama will meet with Eva Longoria and other "influential Hispanics" Thursday to discuss immigration reform.
The White House said Obama would meet with "influential Hispanics from across the country to discuss the importance of fixing the broken immigration system." It said the discussion would focus on fostering "a constructive national conversation on this important issue as we work to build a bipartisan consensus in Congress."
Besides Longoria, the star of "Desperate Housewives," others invited to the gathering include actresses Rosario Dawson and America Ferrera, Univision hosts Don Francisco and Maria Elena Salinas and Telemundo anchors Vanessa Hauc and Jose Diaz-Balart.

Patriots Push Bill to Limit Birthright Citizenship

Four Patriot Senators are pushing legislation to end automatic citizenship for children born in the USA to illegal immigrants. The measure would limit birthright citizenship to children born in the USA who have at least one parent who is already a U.S. citizen, legal resident or active member of the military.

The legislation is different from previous attempts in Congress and in states to amend the 14^th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution – this measure makes changes to existing immigration law to end “birth tourism.” Sens. David Vitter (R-LA), Jerry Moran (R-KS), Mike Lee (R-UT), and Rand Paul (R-KY) were prompted to push this bill after the New York Times exposed the widespread phenomenon of “maternity tourists,” who come to the United States to deliver their babies on American soil in order for their children to obtain U.S. citizenship.

Though "maternity tourism" is not illegal, it is one more way individuals attempt to exploit the loopholes in the current immigration system.

Dollar Resumes Slide As US Jobless Claims Jump, GDP Shows Slowdown

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)-- The dollar didn't need any more bad news, but got it Thursday. The U.S. currency was pushed down further after economic indicators pointed to a dismal employment picture and slowing economic growth.
First-time claims for unemployment benefits jumped by 25,000 to 429,000, indicating employers might have recently slowed their hiring recently. Economists were expecting claims to fall to 395,000.
At the same time, gross domestic product rose at a modest 1.8% pace in the first quarter, matching economists' forecasts. However, the pace of expansion is much weaker than it was at the end of 2010, when the economy was growing at 3.1% pace.
