MUTH'S TRUTHS 04/28/2011

THAT WAS THEN.  NOW?

Back in February 2003, then-Sen. Mark Amodei was asked by reporter Geoff Dornan of the Nevada Appeal about giving state workers the same collectivist bargaining sledgehammer power that local government workers enjoyed over taxpayers.  According to Dornan, Amodei “said he supported collective bargaining for state workers four years ago, again two years ago and will support it this year.”

Now that Amodei is no longer a legislator but the GOP party chairman, we can’t help but wonder if his position has changed, especially in light of Republican efforts to not only keep state workers from getting this power, but stripping the locals of it, too.  Indeed, the Nevada Republican Party has been awful quiet on this issue this session.

SCREWING THE CHILDREN IS “FOR” THE CHILDREN?

For educated people, some public school teachers can be awfully dumb.

Delen Goldberg had an interesting story in the Las Vegas Sun yesterday about a half-dozen public school teachers at a local elementary school who walked out at precisely 2:41 p.m. to protest necessary proposed budget cuts.  “The time is significant,” writes Goldberg.  “At 2:41 p.m., teachers' contract hours end, meaning their official work day is over.”

Why is 2:41 p.m. when their “official” work day is over and not, say, 2:40 p.m. or 2:42 p.m.?  Because that’s what their union’s collectivist bargaining agreement says, that’s why.  And union rules rule.

"If we're not going to get pay increases or stable pay, we're only going to work from 7:30 a.m. to 2:41 p.m." like her union contract says, teacher Brandi Thomas defiantly told Goldberg. "Obviously, working extra hours helps the kids, but this is for the kids, too."

So because her union contract says Ms. Thomas only has to work until 2:41 p.m., she’s not going to stay after any longer to help tutor kids or oversee extracurricular activities and this is somehow “for the kids”?  Who’s she kidding?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: The biggest problem and threat to public education in Nevada isn’t the budget, but the teachers union.  If you’re a teacher, and you pay dues to the NSEA or any of the local or national union affiliates, you’re not the solution; you’re part of the problem.  And if you don’t see that, then maybe you’re not as smart as your degree would have us believe.

Final note: And don’t give me this “I only belong to the union for the legal protection” crud.  You know darned well you can get similar protection by joining the NON-union Association of American Educators.

WHY GOVERNMENT SUCKS: ANOTHER IN A (LONG) SERIES

If this doesn’t make your blood boil, you have no heart.  From today’s Las Vegas Review-Journal:

“A homeless single mother who lives in her van pleaded not guilty Wednesday to stealing $16,000 worth of education for her son by enrolling the kindergartner in her baby-sitter’s school district.  Tanya McDowell, 33, was arrested April 14 on felony charges of committing and attempting to commit first-degree larceny.”

McDowell’s 5-year-old son, A.J., “was removed from Nowalk’s (CT) Brookside Elementary School in January and now lives with relatives in Bridgeport.”  The “bewildered” A.J. doesn’t understand “why he was kicked out of his school.”

Yeah, that makes two of us!

All we ever hear from bleeding heart liberals and government school defenders is how important education is and how our children are the future, blah, blah, blah.  But then the government tosses a poor 5-year-old kid out on his keister and throws his unemployed, homeless mom in the clink all for trying to get her child a good education?  Lousy, rotten, stinkin’, no-good, bureaucrat sons of…

Sorry, I start channeling Lewis Black there for a second!

The prosecutors in this case ought to be keel-hauled (see, Commander Lippold, I WAS paying attention!).  And not only should the school be forced to let little A.J. back in, it ought to be forced to hire A.J.’s mom, who is an out-of-work cook, in the school cafeteria.  Fire some useless, lame-ass teachers union official and pay Ms. McDowell’s salary out that money.

And liberals ought to be screaming bloody murder.  Where are they?  Why do us conservatives always have to be the ones coming to the defense of the most vulnerable in our society?

NEW ADDITION! - FIRST FRIDAY HAPPY HOUR

May’s First Friday Happy Hour in will feature Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain as our VIP guest.  In addition, I was just informed this evening that Taxpayer Champion Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform will be flying in to join us.  So be there or be talked about.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

“I think that the Republican caucus in the Senate will do for Dean Heller what it did not do for John Ensign during the last two years. Ensign was essentially shunned and not given any attention. I think they will try to get Heller a good committee appointment, and there will be an effort by the National Republican Senatorial Committee to make him seem like the greatest freshman senator in the history of senators.” – Las Vegas Sun columnist Jon Ralston
