POP QUIZ

Question: Who said the following on Tuesday about Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform and author of the Taxpayer Protection Pledge:

"For years, Norquist has bullied lawmakers willing to put their oath of office or their promise to serve constituents ahead of their pledge to the anti-tax zealot.  His brand of ideological extremism has been bad for (legislating) and even worse for the country.  So I was pleased to see a few Republicans...distance themselves from Norquist this week. ... Clinging to the kind of ideological purity Grover Norquist peddles – saying you’ll never bend or compromise – is easy.  Cooperating with those with whom you disagree is hard."

Was it (a) Nevada Democrat U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, or (b) Nevada Republican State Sen. Michael Roberson?

If you said Sen. Roberson…wrong.  It was Sen. Reid.  However…

I can certainly understand your confusion since the following is what Sen. Roberson said on this very same subject just a couple weeks ago on Ralston Reports…

LOOKING FOR A GOOD CAUSE FOR “GIVING TUESDAY”?

OK, on Thanksgiving Thursday we gorge on turkey and stuffing (and football).

Then comes Black Friday, a shoppers’ day primarily at the big box and chain retailers.

Which is followed by Small Business Saturday, when we’re encouraged to buy from local merchants (in between college football games!).

On Sunday, of course, we rest (and watch more football!).

And that’s followed by Cyber Monday (today, including Monday Night Football!), when all the online retailers get a whack at our wallets.

But tomorrow is a new, very special day - Giving Tuesday - “a campaign to create a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season” (without football!).

I hadn’t heard of “Giving Tuesday” until this weekend, but it sounds like an excellent idea.  And if you’d like to participate, I humbly have an excellent suggestion for your consideration…

FIXING THE NEVADA GOP

Yes, I could make Nevada GOP relevant in Nevada overnight.  Yes, it could be done without costing the party a dime.  Yes, it involves making one simple change in the party’s operations.

No, I’m not telling everybody about it for free.

Here’s the thing: A lot of high-priced political svengalis in Nevada were paid a sh*tload of money this last election cycle to blow golden opportunities to knock out the worst president since Jimmy Carter, to make Harry Reid the MINORITY Leader in the U.S. Senate and to gain the majority in the Nevada State Senate.

And part of their “genius strategery” was to send lame political mailers to Nevada voters, not from the Nevada Republican Party, but from the Colorado and Idaho Republican parties.  BRILLIANT!

Look, if the party keeps doing what it’s always done, we’ll keep getting what we just got: Screwed.

I COULD FIX THE NEVADA GOP OVERNIGHT

The Nevada Republican Party isn’t insignificant because it can’t raise money; it can’t raise money because it’s insignificant.

But there’s a fix to that problem that wouldn’t cost the party a plug nickel.  All it would take is one minor change in how it operates.  Better…said fix would work at the county GOP level, too.

But I’m sure no one is interested in that, so pretend I never said anything, OK?

THE RISE OF “MODERATE MIKE”- PART III

Before moving on to this third and final review of Sen. Michael Roberson’smoderate “coming out” appearance on “Ralston Reports” a week ago (click here for Part I and click here for Part II), it’ll be helpful to first give you a little background on the conservative icon Roberson trashed in the final minutes of his interview.

There are a lot of people who write conservative columns.  There are many who write conservative books.  Still others who communicate conservatism via radio and TV talk-shows.

THE HORSFORD FILES

Former university chancellor Jim Rogers explains to the Las Vegas Sun why he’s on a personal “rampage” against Democrat congressional candidate Steve Horsford.  A good read.

Meanwhile, not word from Mr. Horsford on my challenge for him to confront me on his “race-baiting” accusation on Jon Ralston’s Face to Face program.

Why am I not surprised?  Bawk, bawk, bawwwk!

On the other hand, some of Horsy’s loyal, perpetually-offended defenders have come to his defense on Twitter.  For example, Erik C. Huey‏ hunt-and-pecked:

“Asked if he'll apologize 4 racially slamming NV CD4 Dem @StevenHorsford, @ChuckMuth said 'Sorry, Homey don't play that.' Sick #TeaPartyTrash”

Tea party trash?  What’s that got to do with anything?

As for apologizing, first there’d have to be something to apologize for. There isn’t.  There simply was no racial slam.  It was a slam for being a hypocrite.

SILVER STATE CONFIDENTIAL 09/24/2012

THE HORSFORD FILES

Democrat CD-4 candidate Steven Horsford's camp has been slamming GOP opponent Danny Tarkanian for allegedly promoting the stereotype that black folks like to play a lot of basketball.  Oops.  Check this out: click here

ANOTHER REPUBLICAN KICKS TAXPAYERS IN THE “JUNK”

Here we go again.  Yet another example of why taxpayers just can’t trust any Republican candidate who refuses to sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge.

According to a weekend story by Ray Hagar of the Reno Gazette-Journal, Republican state Sen. Greg Brower now supports Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval’s proposal to re-impose some $620 million worth of the “temporary” tax hikes that were supposed to expire next year – a huge tax hike which, by the way, Brower voted AGAINST last year!

Brower’s reported excuse for the flip-flop: He can’t support education cuts.

Here’s why this is so outrageous…and not just because Brower was against the “sunsets” before he was for them.

SPECIAL GUEST COMMENTARY

Our Michael Corleone Foreign Policy
by Rich Galen
September 14, 2012

In the Godfather Part II, Al Pacino, as Michael Corleone, says:

"My father taught me many things in this room. One of them was 'Keep your friends close … and your enemies closer.'"

Which I was thinking about yesterday when I Tweeted (you can follow me @richgalen):

So, Obama speaks with [Egyptian President Mohammad] Morsi (who is NOT an ally) but snubs [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu (who IS an ally).

Yesterday afternoon the Associated Press thought there was so much anti-American activity in the Middle East that they had to put all of it into one easy-to-digest filing. The hotspots were:

MUTH'S TRUTHS 09/30/2011

An obscure Republican Party activist in Reno named Orrin Johnson - whom political pundit Jon Ralston calls a "true conservative" (meaning he agrees with Jon) - inked a blog post on Thursday in defense of allowing non-Republicans to show up at the Republican presidential caucus in February, register to vote right there on the spot, and cast a ballot to help choose the GOP nominee.

The fallacy and folly of Mr. Johnson's argument is immediately apparent in the second paragraph, where he claims he "vehemently oppose(s) same-day voter registration for regular elections" because "it's an open invitation to fraud."
