STAR-STUDDED, ACTION-PACKED FIRST FRIDAY HAPPY HOUR TOMORROW!

As you already know, Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform is our scheduled VIP guest-of-honor for this Friday’s First Friday Happy Hour. But Grover’s gonna be running late, so you’ll have to stick around until about 6:30 pm to catch him.

However, we’ve now confirmed that Sen. Rand Paul will be stopping by and saying a few words!  And yesterday my “joined-at-the-hip” co-host, Alan Stock, confirmed that national conservative talk-show host Rusty Humphries (remind me to tell you about Rusty and the Harley “Fat Boy” I won from NPRI!) will be joining us.

Plus, “Atlas Shrugged” producer Harmon Kaslow will be in the house, as well as our good friend and former Nevadan Mark Warden, now a state representative in New Hampshire.  And conservative Nevada State Assemblyman Jim Wheeler from Douglas County.

And yes, John Burnett of Las Vegas Gold and Jewelry Buyers will again be buying drinks for the first 100 people through the door!

First Friday is held at Bahama Breeze on the corner of Flamingo and Paradise in the Hughes Center, just east of the Strip.  $5 voluntary donation requested.

Doors open to the general public at 5:00 pm, but Silver State Confidential subscribers and ONE GUEST can get in early at 4:30 pm.

A HAPPY FIRST FRIDAY HAPPY HOUR ANNOUNCEMENT

Although our announced VIP guest-of-honor, Grover Norquist, isn’t going to be able to make it to our First Friday Happy Hour until late, we have confirmed today that U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) will be stopping by!

And perhaps a few other surprise guests who are in town for Freedom Fest.

Doors will open to the general public at 5:00 pm.  VIP Early Access at 4:30 pm for Silver State Confidential subscribers…though I can’t promise that the Senator will be there early.

And yes, John Burnett of Las Vegas Jewelry and Coin Buyers will be buying drinks for the first 100 people through the door again.  So, oh, what another happy Happy Hour it will be!

STAYING AN EDUCATION EXECUTION

Woo-hoo!

Alameda County Judge Evelio Grillo “issued a tentative ruling Monday suspending the charter revocation of American Indian Model Schools and stopping the school district from interfering with funding or operations.”

That means the dumb-asses at the Oakland school district cannot shut down this high-performing school which has achieved such great academic success under the leadership of Dr. Ben Chavis…who spoke at our First Friday Happy Hour in April…for at least another year.

MCKEON MACACA: HERE COMES THE BOOM!

As I noted on Friday, I have a written statement from Dave McKeon’s ex-wife, Monica McKeon, in response to the Clark County GOP chairman candidate calling her a liar on Alan Stock’s radio show last Monday.

I’ve withheld the statement for a few days after sending Dave an email last Thursday evening offering him an opportunity to end this fiasco and avoid further embarrassment for himself, the party and especially his children.

You can read my offer by clicking here

Unless Dave accepts the offer by 7:00 a.m. (Pacific) tomorrow morning (Tuesday), I will release Monica’s statement and discuss it on the air with Stock.  Tune in to KDWN 720 AM or www.kdwn.com.

“HASTERT RULE” LETTER SUBMITTED TO SPEAKER BOEHNER

Citizen Outreach’s coalition letter urging adoption of the “Hastert Rule” – by which legislation would not be brought to the House floor unless a majority of the GOP caucus was in favor of it - was faxed to House Speaker John Boehner on Independence Day, 2013.

Man Who  Would be Chair Sees Foot,
Shoots it Off with a Howitzer!

I'm on my way out the door for lunch with former Assemblyman Ed Goedhart, but before leaving I just wanted to give everyone a heads up...

"Dave from California" McKeon - the congressman's son who's running to "save" the Clark County Republican Party from the principled leaders currently in charge, went on the Alan Stock Show this morning to respond to allegations of domestic violence made by his ex-wife.

And proceeded to commit political-suicide-by-conservative-talkshow-host!

Yes, it was THAT bad.

Turns out, the allegations against him are true...at least according to the court.  Oh, and to McKeon...sort of.

Indeed, while McKeon admitted that the court found him guilty of spousal battery, he stills says the accusations weren't true and he just admitted to them to get the divorce proceedings over with and because he didn't have a good attorney.

Seriously?  Seriously.

We are NOT a Nation of Immigrants

June 27, 2013

I don’t know about you, but I’m sick and tired of hearing this old cliché that we’re “a nation of immigrants.”

No, we’re not.  We’re a nation of Americans.

Granted, at one time we were a confederation of immigrants spread out through 13 different colonies.  However, once independence from King George was secured by our Founders, we became one nation of Americans.

That’s not to say our relatives didn’t come from another country or that we don’t have a lot of people from a lot of countries wanting to move here.  We do.  Indeed, there are far more people wanting to get in than get out.

But the question is whether, for example, Germans want to be Germans who live in the United States…or want to be Americans?  Do Chinese want to be Chinese who live in the United States…or do they want to be Americans?  Do Mexicans want to be Mexicans who live in the United States…or do they want to be Americans?

Tell Congress to Take the
Training Wheels off the Tractors!

Fellow Conservative --

American sugar farmers can compete with any sugar farmers anywhere on the planet…on a level playing field.  Unfortunately, many foreign farmers still have “training wheels” on their tractors.

Those training wheels come in the form of government subsidies which often artificially reduce the cost of foreign sugar as compared to U.S. prices.

On the other hand, U.S. sugar producers receive ZERO dollars in taxpayer subsidy checks and U.S. sugar policy was the only U.S. farm program to cost exactly ZERO dollars from 2002-2012.

However, because of the danger posed by subsidized foreign sugar, there are protective quotas currently imposed on foreign sugar imports.

TAX HIKERS ARE “WEAK AND LAZY”

Democrats love tax hikes because they mean more money for government to do more things.  Conservatives loathe tax hikes because they mean more money for government to do more things.  Philosophically-challenged Republicans vote for tax hikes because…well, they stand for nothing, so they’ll fall for anything.

Which brings us to how Gov. Brian Sandoval and the Nevada Legislature tried to duck voting for a number of tax hikes this session: By passing the buck to local officials.  This way they can say “they” didn’t raise taxes; county commissioners did.

Now, these people thought they were being slick by punting the decision and not voting directly to raise taxes, but this ploy is nothing new.  In fact, it’s this kind of weaseling by politicians that is expressly prohibited by the wording of the Taxpayer Protection Pledge.

The Pledge doesn’t say no “new” taxes.  And it doesn’t say you’ll only vote against “direct” tax hikes.  It reads very clearly as follows:

“I (candidate’s name) pledge to the taxpayers of the (number) district of the state of (name of state) and all the people of this state that I will oppose and vote against any and all efforts to increase taxes.”

THE BAHAMA BREEZE BRAWL SPILLS INTO THE STREET!

The heated debate begun two weeks ago at Bahama Breeze at Citizen Outreach’sFirst Friday Happy Hour continues with an early morning wake-up tomorrow on The Alan Stock Show.

Alan has graciously invited me to join him on the show to continue in my role as Grand Inquisitor…and this one could end up being a real barn-burner!

I expect to include some rather uncomfortable questions of both candidates – incumbent Chairman Cindy Lake and challenger Dave McKeon - related to two absolutely brutal websites set up against each of them…details of which will be revealed later this afternoon to Silver State Confidential subscribers.

The verbal fisticuffs will be heard live from 7:30-9:00 am on KDWN 720 AM in Las Vegas, or on the web at http://kdwn.com.

What a way for Republicans to start their day.  Set your alarms now, kids!

This C.R.A.P. Simply Isn’t Constitutional
By Chuck Muth

I’m no lawyer; nor do I play one on TV…but I can read plain English, including much of what appears in the Nevada Constitution.  For example, take Article 1 (“Declaration of Rights”), Section 22 (“Eminent Domain Proceedings”)…

Section 22-1 clearly states: “Public use shall not include the direct or indirect transfer of any interest in property taken in an eminent domain proceeding from one private party to another private party.”

Yet what the city or North Las Vegas is contemplating abusing its eminent domain powers to seize a performing home loan from one private group of investors and then transferring that home loan to another private group of investors…providing the homeowner can qualify for a new loan.

If not, the homeowner could very well end up homeless!

Section 22-4 clearly states: “In all eminent domain actions, just compensation shall be defined as that sum of money, necessary to place the property owner back in the same position, monetarily, without any governmental offsets, as if the property had never been taken.”
But here’s how this C.R.A.P. (Community Resolution Assistance Program) will work:

SEX!

OK, now that I have your attention…

Some folks were confused upon arrival at the Bahama Breeze Brawl/debate between Clark County GOP Chair Cindy Lake and her challenger, Dave McKeon that Citizen Outreach hosted at last week’s First Friday Happy Hour.

Naturally, I’m biased, but I thought it was both very informative and very entertaining - and Dan Burdish, Alan Stock and I are looking forward to doing a lot more of these next year during the party primaries.

That said, let me again explain that I publish TWO different and separate e-newsletters…

1.)  Muth’s Truths (which you’re reading right now): This one is FREE.

2.)  Silver State Confidential: More of an “insiders” e-newsletter which covers issues and politics at a more detailed and advanced level.  This one is a PAIDsubscription newsletter.

Now…everyone who subscribes to Muth’s Truths was able to get into the debate at the regular starting time of 5:00 pm on Friday night.

However…paid subscribers to Silver State Confidential were allowed to come in earlyat 4:30 pm for a meet-and-greet with the candidates and to reserve the best seats in the house.  After all, as the saying goes…

SANDOVAL LAUNCHES “BIG LIE” RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN

The “Big Lie” is a propaganda technique embraced by the communists in which the offending party tells a whopper so “colossal” that the public would refuse to believe anyone “could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously."

The audacity of Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval’s early re-election campaign propaganda certainly falls into that category, but fortunately for the governor the Nevada Legislature passed a law this session making it illegal to fire anyone for being a communist.  (Although I’m not sure the law applies to voters.)

In any event, the slogan “Better Schools, No New Taxes,” rolled out in the closing days of the legislative session, is a demonstrable whopper on both counts.

On Thursday, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that “less than 19 percent of Clark County high school students passed the Algebra I spring semester exam in 2012” and “not even half of eighth-graders passed the pre-algebra exam.”  Worse, only half of elementary and middle school students “earned the minimum score for grade-level proficiency on the state’s reading, writing and science tests.”

IMPORTANT INFO ON TOMORROW NIGHT’S “BAHAMA BREEZE BRAWL”!

Don’t miss tomorrow night’s “First Friday Happy Hour” candidate debate between Clark County Republican Party Chairman Cindy Lake and her challenger Dave McKeon at Bahama Breeze beginning around 6 pm.

WARNING: Uli Miyashiro sent out an email yesterday urging people to “plan on arriving early to get seats.  It might not be a stretch to suggest getting there at 4:00 pm.”

This is NOT accurate. The room will NOT be open to the general public until the regular 5:00 pm starting time.

Only paid subscribers to my Silver State Confidential e-newsletter (subscribe here) will be allowed in at 4:30 pm if they present their VIP EARLY ACCESS PASS at the door.

As usual, a $5 voluntary donation is requested at the door to help offset the costs involved in putting these events on – but it is NOT a “cover charge” as Uli said in her email.

If you can’t afford the $5, no sweat…we won’t turn anyone away (unless we exceed the maximum number of people allowed in the room by the fire marshal).

And yes, John Burnett of Las Vegas Jewelry and Coin Buyers will once again be buying “Happy Hour” drinks for the first 100 people through the door!  (Although, the first 100 people through the door might be our Silver State Confidentialsubscribers.)

See you tomorrow night!

Friend --

When it comes to preventing gun violence in Nevada, there's good news and bad news.

The good news: Yesterday afternoon, the Nevada Legislature passed Senate Bill 221, which will strengthen our gun laws, including requiring background checks on all gun purchases. That's huge.

The bad news: Governor Brian Sandoval has threatened to veto it.

He has nine days to sign this bill into law. So here's something you can do right now to help change his mind -- make sure he knows where the people of Nevada stand.

Call Gov. Sandoval's office at (775) 684-5670 and tell him to sign this important background checks bill today.

KIRNER TINKLES ON OUR TOES, HANDS OUT UMBRELLAS

AB46 doesn’t raise taxes.

It’s worse. Far worse.

It essentially “enables” the Washoe County school district to seek a tax hike…without a 2/3 vote of the Legislature OR a vote of the people.  As conservative Republican State Sen. Don Gustavson explains…

“Years ago, Nevadans favored a constitutional change that restricted tax-happy legislators from raising your taxes without the approval of a two-thirds majority. Under AB46, the spirit of that constitutional mandate becomes moot.”

And as conservatives have warned, if they can pull this crap off is Washoe County, the dirty little tax-hiking trick will soon visit all of Nevada’s other counties.  And that’s what makes it so bad.

Make no mistake; this is an effort to raise taxes, plain and simple.  So any legislator who signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge and thought voting for the bill wasn’t a Pledge violation because it didn’t raise taxes directly is wrong.

The good news is that 8 Republicans in the Assembly voted against this effort to increase taxes, including all four of the Tax Pledge signers: Michele Fiore, Jim Wheeler, Pete Livermore and John Hambrick.

MUTH'S TRUTHS 06/03/2013

SPEND, SPEND, SPEND, SPEND, SPEND, SPEND, SPEND…

On Sunday, only ONE Republican in the Assembly voted against the massive spending increases in the budget proposed by Gov. Brian “The Artful Dodger” Sandoval (R&R-Partners).

Now here’s the thing that so many Republicans keep missing about tax hikes and the Tax Pledge: It’s not so much whether or not those whose taxes are being raised can afford it or if it will retard job creation.  It’s about this…

If you give the government more money, the government will spend it to make the government bigger and do more “stuff.”  As late President Ronald Reagan put it, “Government always finds a need for whatever money it gets.”

Or as he observed on a separate occasion, “No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear.”

Indeed, the GOP reason to oppose tax hikes isn’t to oppose tax hikes for the sake of opposing tax hikes. The conservative reason to oppose tax hikes is because conservatives are supposed to SHRINK government, not expand it.

And in case there are any Republicans out there who still aren’t sure if this is supposed to be their position, allow me to refer them to the authoritative source on this subject, the late, great Arizona Republican Sen. Barry “Conscience of a Conservative” Goldwater, who wrote:

Oppose SB-221 Gun Control Bill:
"Paves the Way to Universal Background Checks
"

From Sen. Don Gustavson (R-Washoe):

Greetings!

This is a 2nd Amendment Alert!

Some of us are doing our best to hold the fort against those who want to tear down the Second Amendment, but we need your voice. An out-of-state group called Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a gun control group funded by New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, has been pounding our state with ads and putting pressure on legislators and the governor to infringe your constitutional rights.

Senate Bill 221, an anti-gun measure, has already jumped some legislative hurdles but it still needs to pass out the legislature and reach the Governor's Desk. The Governor has not clearly indicated whether he will back the bill. He needs to hear your voice before a determination is made. The National Rifle Association has labeled this proposed legislation as an "extremist anti-gun bill" and is encouraging gun owners to oppose this bill. They agree that passage of this bill as written would create a "huge burden for law-abiding citizens" and warns, "it paves the way for universal background checks."

DRIVE-BY MUTHINGS

Heading north this morning for a brief visit to the Nevada Legislature to witness the debacle as it winds down (see next item), and then over to Oakland, California for a two-day visit with our new BFF, Dr. Ben Chavis, to personally visit his award-winning, super-spectacular charter schools…that the local school board is closing down.

Film at 11…

ASSEMBLY GOP TO FOLD HOLDING FOUR ACES

With a week to go in the 2013 session, Republicans in the Assembly hold all the cards…but if history is any guide, we can expect them to fold the minute it comes time to bet without even looking at their hand.

In a Las Vegas Review-Journal story this morning, it was again noted that none of the GOP’s most important reform bills – including construction defect reform, public employee benefit reform, prevailing wage reform and school voucher reform – have been given so much as the time of day.

But here’s the thing…

MUTH'S TRUTHS 05/26/2013

CORRECTION: There were FIVE Republicans who voted in favor of the parent trigger bill in the Assembly, not four. The fifth was Assemblyman Wes Duncan (R-Las Vegas).  The text has been corrected below...

THE INCREDIBLE, AMAZING, UNBELIEVABLE ASSEMBLY GOP EPIC FAIL

As someone who has been chronicling and documenting the GOP’s unending penchant for never blowing an opportunity to blow an opportunity for over two decades now, even I was stunned and incredulous at how Assembly Republicans unbelievably tanked a slam-dunk opportunity Friday night.

Let’s set the stage…

1.) There is no issue of greater import facing Nevada’s Legislature than education. Period.  You fix the education mess we have and so many other problems fix themselves, including economic and crime.

2.) You don’t fix the education problem by throwing more money down the rathole. The only way to improve education on a massive scale is to give parents far more choices that do not involve the anti-education teachers union.

3.) The Nevada Legislature is controlled by Democrats in both the upper and lower house; therefore, passing any true education reform proposal that includes greater parental choice without costing more money would be a rare, rare, rare, rare, rare opportunity in this political climate.

IT’S NOT CALLED CRAP FOR NOTHING

According to George Knapp’s column in this week’s issue of CityLife, Channel 8 reporter Nathan Baca was interviewing former Democrat U.S. Senate candidateByron Georgiou about his scheme to get local governments to abuse their eminent domain powers to seize homes of certain people who are underwater on the value of their property but are current on their payments and turning the property over to an investment group for a dirt-cheap price.

Georgiou told Baca he was calling this new form of “land scam” the “Community Resolution Assistance Program” – until Baca pointed out what the acronym was.

I’m assuming Georgiou and his group of property raiders has since changed the name of their scheme, but to us the proposal will always be CRAP!

DR. JEKYLL AND ASSEMBLYWOMAN HYDE

You can count the number of philosophical, as opposed to rhetorical, conservatives serving in this year’s Nevada Legislature on one hand.  Assemblywoman Michele Fiore (R-Las Vegas) is one of them.  Alas, the freshman has proved to be quite the Jekyll-and-Hyde conservative.

When Fiore has been right – as with her campus carry bill – she has been very, very right.  But when she’s been wrong – breaking her signed Taxpayer Protection Pledge by voting to raise the sales tax in Clark County as a payback to the cops union for supporting her campus carry bill – she’s been very, very wrong.
