NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICT

Dear Friend,

Earlier this week, President Biden missed the mark while giving his State of the Union Address. The theme of his speech was “finish the job.”

I've got a few questions for the Administration - Are they going to FINISH their war on energy? Are they going to FINISH their wasteful spending? Are they going to FINISH tiptoeing around our adversaries?

The "finish the job" theme sounds great on paper but is unattainable. To "finish the job," the Biden Administration must focus on doing their job effectively, ending reckless spending, and helping the American people.

In his speech, the President promised to spend more and expand the size of our government. Unfortunately, neither of these things will help you pay your bills.

In the first few weeks, House Republicans passed bills to –

  • Reopen the People’s House.
  • Defend our energy security.
  • Protect the sanctity of life.
  • Defund Joe Biden’s IRS army.
  • Address the CCP’s malign influence.
  • End the weaponization of the federal govt.
And we’re just getting started. It’s time to get America back on its feet with real solutions that help you.

A Recap of My Week
Holy Nativity Episcopal Visits DC

The Holy Nativity Episcopal School of Panama City stopped by Capitol Hill during their 7th Grade trip to Washington, D.C. I’m glad I got to meet these future leaders, and I hope they had fun exploring our nation’s capital.

Supporting a Free Iran

Image

I proudly joined Rep. McClintock (CA-05) this past week at a press conference to announce a House Resolution I co-sponsored that condemns Iranian state-sponsored terrorist attacks. The Iranian regime commits heinous acts with a complete disregard for human rights. I encourage the Iranian people to keep fighting for fundamental freedoms and to speak out against tyranny, corruption, and crimes against humanity.

The TROOP Act

This past week, I introduced the “The TROOP Act” (H.R. 828), a bill that would provide back pay for all service members that were unjustly separated from the armed forces due to refusing the COVID-19 vaccine. The Troop Act would cover all branches, reservists, and the National Guard. Additionally, the bill would allow servicemembers to be reinstated in the military at the same rank and grade.

As the son of a veteran, the father of a veteran, and a veteran myself, I understand and appreciate the sacrifices service members and their families make in defending our freedoms. Over 8,400 servicemembers have been discharged for choosing not to take the COVID-19 vaccine. Their lives were uprooted, and they now deserve justice since the Biden vaccine mandate has been lifted. Giving this pay and the option to be reinstated is long overdue. I’m proud and honored to do my part to fight for our service members and their families.

Read more about the bill here.

The REPAIR Act

I also recently introduced “The REPAIR Act” (H.R. 906), a bill that would ensure access to the important repair and diagnostic data needed for automobile repairs.

When it comes to repairing their automobiles, consumers deserve options. The REPAIR Act would give owners secure access to critical data so their chosen service center can replace parts and repair their vehicles  which is especially important for those who live in rural areas. I am proud to support competition in the vehicle repair industry.

You can read more about the bill here.

Updates From Agencies
Service Industry Tip Reporting

The Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service issued Notice 2023-13, which contains a proposed revenue procedure that would establish the Service Industry Tip Compliance Agreement (SITCA) program, a voluntary tip reporting program between the IRS and employers in various service industries.

IRS: Using Direct Deposit for Tax Refund

In the latest improvement for taxpayers, the Internal Revenue Service announced that people electronically filing their Form 1040-X, Amended U.S Individual Income Tax Return will, for the first time, be able to select direct deposit for any resulting refund.

Previously, taxpayers who filed Form 1040-X with the IRS had to wait for a paper check for any refund, a step that added time onto the amended return process. Now, anyone who electronically files the Form 1040-X can select direct deposit and enter their banking or financial institution information for quicker delivery of refunds. Taxpayers file a total of approximately 3 million amended returns each year. Read more here.

A lot of people have contacted my office about their pending passport applications. My team does everything we can to assist those who need their passports; however, you will likely face a delay in the upcoming months.  Please review the information below from the Passport Agency about current processing times and tips to help you plan ahead.

What to Expect:

Mail delays are impacting when we receive passport applications for processing. Our processing times begin the day we receive your application, not the day you mail it.

Routine service can take 8-11 weeks from the day an application is submitted to the day a new passport is received.

Expedite service (for an additional $60) can take 5-7 weeks from the day an application is submitted to the day a new passport is received.

We suggest you:

Send your application to us via trackable mail, so you can track your application before it enters our system. This can be done whether applying at an acceptance facility or by mail.

Or

Pay an extra $19.53 for 1-2 day delivery for the return of your completed passport.

Planning to Travel? Apply Early! Apply at least six months before planned travel. Due to limited availability for urgent travel appointments, we cannot guarantee you can receive in-person service at a passport agency or center. We are prioritizing customers with life-or-death emergencies. Visit our Passport Agency and Center page to learn more.
