NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICTDear Friend, Let me clear something up – the Constitution says: “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” This past week, President Joe Biden said that “no amendment is absolute” regarding the Second Amendment. I’m not sure how the President defines the word “absolute,” but the Founding Fathers’ language seems absolute to me.
President Biden’s executive orders are unacceptable. You should not be punished for the actions of criminals. These executive orders do little to properly address gun violence and crime.
The Democrats are determined to push their radical liberal agenda, even if it means trampling on your Constitutional rights. Our Founding Fathers knew what they were doing when they ratified the 2nd Amendment, and the language is still just as valid as the day it was written. I stand ready to fight to preserve our Constitution and your right to bear arms. I'd also like to add that my friend and colleague, Representative Dan Crenshaw (TX-02), announced this weekend that he is recovering after an emergency eye procedure. He will be "effectively blind" for about a month. Rep. Crenshaw is no stranger to overcoming obstacles and I have no doubt that he’ll get through this. That said, please keep him in your prayers. This Week in the District What’s Happening on Capitol Hill Coronavirus Updates This Week in the District Meeting Florida-02’s App Competition Winners
Last December, my office announced that Lawton Chiles High School students Sandhya and Surabhi Kumar won the 2020 Congressional App Competition for Florida’s Second Congressional District. Their app titled “Phenotype” can be used to determine the probability of offspring having certain traits.
When I met with the sisters on Monday, I got a chance to try out the app and to hear about what inspired them to create it. I’m proud of these young ladies for not only winning but for their interest in STEM. I’m confident that we will see more great things from these sisters in the future. Congratulations, Sandhya and Surabhi!
Examining the Sunshine State’s Solar Facilities
On Monday, I had the opportunity to visit Substation 12, near Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. This distributed generation facility provides efficient power for the City’s customers. In addition to serving TMH, this substation provides power to a large segment of the Tallahassee medical community. I also stopped by a solar facility on Jackson Bluff Road. This facility has been identified as the largest on-airport solar farm in the world.
I'm happy to see our district support an all-of-the-above energy strategy. Thank you to the Florida Municipal Electric Association and the City of Tallahassee for setting up this tour! Visiting Lake City Medical Center
On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of visiting with the fine folks at Lake City Medical Center. LCMC recently began an expansion project that will add approximately 7,000 square feet and 12 new beds to the facility. The project is expected to take around 6 months and will bring the hospital’s capacity to 103 beds.
This expansion will not only benefit Lake City Medical but the entire community. Thank you all for having me! What’s Happening on Capitol Hill Bipartisan Letter to the IRS Urging Relief
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently announced an extension for individuals to file their 2020 federal income taxes; however, this relief does not apply to quarterly estimated tax payments. Those payments will be due on April 15th, 2021.
As individuals and small businesses continue to deal with the unprecedented impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, my colleagues and I believe aligning the estimated payments deadline with the regular tax filing deadline will streamline tax filings and help ensure accurate tax compliance.
We sent a bipartisan letter to the IRS Commissioner urging him to extend the federal tax filing deadline for first quarter estimated tax payments to May 17, 2021. Our small businesses have been through enough in the past year. They need this relief. You can read the full letter here. Coronavirus Updates Get Vaccinated

Constituent Casework Corner
When a constituent didn’t receive their monthly direct deposit from the Social Security Administration (SSA), they reached out to the agency to resolve the issue. After countless phone calls and hours on the phone with no resolution, they contacted my office. We were able to work with SSA to have the system error addressed and the benefit released.
