Governor DeSantis’s recent executive orders are designed to protect life. Staying home should decrease the number of people infected with the potentially deadly coronavirus and prevent our healthcare system from being overrun with critical cases that would keep it from serving patients with other health emergencies, like heart attacks and strokes. This is fundamentally pro-life, but the Governor needs to go even further and shut down the state’s abortion providers.
Despite having barred other elective surgeries and calling for the shutdown of thousands of other “nonessential” businesses across the state, Governor DeSantis has not yet deemed abortion services “nonessential.” There would certainly be a court challenge, as other states have faced, but now is not the time to give an inch in the fight for life. I’m thankful for Governor DeSantis’s leadership and his strong pro-life record. I hope we can count on him now to make the logical and morally right decision to shut down abortion clinics and direct their medical resources to the fight against COVID-19. It’s the right thing to do.
And once this battle is behind us, it will also be right and necessary to take swift action to roll back the government orders that have infringed on our fundamental freedoms. We are united in our desire to do all we can to end the pandemic, but government overreach is dangerous, and without the resolve of conservative leaders to stop it, we can find ourselves on the slippery slope away from free enterprise and individual liberties.
Please join me in praying for our leaders and for our community. No one is unaffected by COVID-19. These are tough days, no doubt about it, but I know we will get through them together.
