FLORIDA - SENATOR MARCO RUBIO'S WEEK 10/04/2019

This Week in the Office of Senator Marco Rubio

On Friday, as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, I convened a hearing titled, “Florida’s Coastal Economy: Opportunities and Challenges in the Florida Keys.” Read more here.

On Monday, my op-ed titled, “Socialism is Entirely Incompatible With America and Its Unique, Entrepreneurial Spirit” was published in Fox Business. Socialism is wholly incompatible with America. Our unique, entrepreneurial spirit thrives in defiance of the notion of state control of markets. Read more here.

On Monday, I penned an op-ed in CNBC with Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) titled, “Federal Retirement Savings Should Not Fund China’s Communist Party.” We discussed the shortsighted decision by FRTIB which will effectively use the retirement savings of federal government employees, including members of the armed forces, to fund the Chinese government and Communist Party’s efforts to undermine U.S. economic and national security. Read more here.

On Wednesday, I joined Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) in sending letters to 11 social media companies to express our concerns over the growing threat posed by deepfakes, which are sophisticated audio and video technologies that allow users to create fake audio and/or video files that falsely depict someone saying or doing something. Read more here.

On Tuesday, Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) and I led a bipartisan group of senators in urging Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin to use existing authorities to impose sanctions against Russian officials responsible for human rights abuses, including an overwhelming number of political prisoners in that country. Read more here.
On Tuesday, I was joined by Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) in sending a letter to the Chairman of the National Endowment of the Arts, Mary Anne Carter, raising our concerns on the use of U.S. taxpayer dollars to fund an exhibit at Duke University’s Nasher Museum of Art and Northwestern University’s Block Museum of Art, which feature portraits of the infamous Argentine revolutionary Ernesto Ché Guevara.
