DAILY BELLWETHER 07/02/2018 CANADA BEGINS TARIFFS (foolishly)

Maxine Waters 'Surprised' by Fellow Democrats' Rebukes

Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., said Sunday that she was "surprised" by criticism from Democratic leaders over her statement that people should "push back" against members of the Trump administration over its immigration policy. "One of the things I recognize, being an elected official, is in the final analysis, leadership ... will do anything that they think is necessary to protect their leadership and so what I have to do is not focus on them," Waters told MSNBC. Waters attracted criticism from Republicans last weekend after she told rally-goers in her Los Angeles congressional district that members of the public should confront members of the Trump administration and ... Read More

Canada Begins Tariffs on US Goods

Canada began imposing tariffs Sunday on $12.6 billion in U.S. goods as retaliation for the Trump administration's new taxes on steel and aluminum imported to the United States. Some U.S. products, mostly steel and iron, face 25 percent tariffs, the same penalty the United States slapped on imported steel at the end of May. Other U.S. imports, from ketchup to pizza to dishwasher detergent, will face a 10 percent tariff at the Canadian border, the same as America's tax on imported aluminum. The Maine senator said she would only back a judge who would show respect for settled law such as the 45-year-old Roe decision, which has long been an anathema to conservatives. "I would not support a nominee who demonstrated ... Read More

Trump Officials Lay out Ambitious Plan to Denuclearize North Korea

Trump administration officials say North Korea’s nuclear program could be fully dismantled in one year, laying out an ambitious time frame if Kim Jong-un’s regime cooperates with the U.S. The claim, made by White House National Security Adviser John R. Bolton during a round of TV interviews Sunday, comes as the Trump administration is quietly accelerating negotiations with North Korea in what analysts describe as the crucial next step that will make or break the denuclearization agreement struck at the Singapore summit. If those negotiations succeed and the denuclearization process moves ahead, Mr. Bolton says the administration believes it can ... Read More

3 WH Officials Will Stay Until SC Justice Confirmed

Three White House officials looking to exit in the coming weeks are now considering staying through the confirmation of a new Supreme Court justice, ABC News reported. White House counsel Don McGahn, legislative affairs director Marc Short and domestic policy director Andrew Bremberg have all signaled they plan to leave, but will stick around to see through a process to determine a successor for the retiring Anthony Kennedy, the news outlet reported. McGahn's team will lead the confirmation process. "He's excited for it," one unnamed source told ABC News. "This is what he's been working for all along." ... Read More
