#EndFGM

Dear Conservatives --
Today is the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).  Globally, it is estimated that at least 200 million girls and women have had some form of FGM done to them. Female Genital Mutilation, also known as FGM, is a procedure often done on young girls between the ages of 4-14. It involves the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other cutting applied to the female genital organs.

FGM can cause severe bleeding and health issues including, cysts, infections, infertility as well as complications in childbirth and increased risks of newborn deaths. FGM is a violation of the human rights of girls and women all over the world - including in the United States.

Here in the United States, over 500,000 young girls and women are currently at risk of having this horrible, gruesome procedure inflicted on them. Yet, only 27 states have passed legislation outlawing Female Genital Mutilation.

ACT for America has been at the forefront, leading the charge for FGM prevention laws all across the country. Since 2007, our activists have been the driving force behind passing anti-FGM legislation in dozens of states. In 2018, we are continuing that fight and working to pass anti-FGM legislation in nine (9) more states.

We will not stop until all 50 states in America have passed anti-FGM legislation. This isn't just a national security issue, this is a human rights issue.
