A Baltimore fire official says six children died in an early morning blaze Thursday. The victims are two boys, ages 9 months and 2 years; 3-year-old twin girls; and two girls, ages 10 and 11. The children’s mother and two boys, ages 4 and 5, were in critical condition at a hospital.

MELBOURNE - It was a grim death toll: 45 cats, five dogs, a pet macaw and even a raccoon. Now Brevard County Sheriff ’s Office agents have opened a criminal investigation into the circumstances leading up to a Wednesday morning bedroom fire on Merritt Island that led to the deaths of the pets. The fire was reported around 3 a.m. at a single-story, concrete block home. A couple living in the home escaped without injury. Neighbors and investigators said firetrucks crowded the narrow streets of the neighborhood as a frantic, desperate rescue scene unfolded. Firefighters, using oxygen masks, were seen attempting to save as many of the cats and dogs — including a number of mixed-breeds and Australian shepherds — as possible. What could be the worst ice storm in 10 years began Friday in the central U.S., as forecasters warned it will unload freezing rain on a 1,000-mile swath from the central Plains to the mid-Atlantic over the weekend. The storm is expected to cause downed trees, extensive power outages and make driving dangerous or impossible as roads turn into sheets of ice. Ice was already accumulating by midday Friday from Oklahoma to Indiana, the Weather Channel said, with downed trees and nearly 4,000 power outages reported in Springfield, Mo. The worst conditions could be centered on portions of northwestern Texas, western Oklahoma and central Kansas, where there is the potential for about an inch of ice to encase the region followed by 30-mph winds, AccuWeather meteorologist Eddie Walker said. Irish bookmaker Paddy Power is offering 6-to-1 odds that an iceberg almost the size of Delaware — or Luxembourg, in European terms — will break free this month from the Larsen C Ice Shelf. An ice shelf, for the lesser learned, is a permanent floating sheet of ice that connects to a landmass, the National Snow and Ice Data Center tells us. “You don’t have to be Captain of the Titanic to spot this is a serious problem for the planet, so we thought we’d do our bit to raise some awareness,” Paddy Power said in a statement.
