IRAQ ERUPTS AS PROTESTS TARGET CORRUPTION

w vid Car bombs hit southern region as country’s political stability is threatened
by Rick Jervis - USA TODAY

Iraq experienced one of its roughest weekends in recent memory, when protesters angry about government corruption stormed the heavily fortified Green Zone on Saturday and dual car bombs exploded Sunday in southern Iraq, killing at least 31. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the bombings. The protesters announced Sunday they would temporarily end their sit-in and started to leave the Green Zone. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi had called Sunday for the arrests of protesters who tore down blast walls and infiltrated the Green Zone, filling the parliament building and assaulting Iraqi lawmakers. No one was seriously injured. The protests, by followers of Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, came two days after a surprise visit to Baghdad by Vice President Biden, who praised the progress Iraqi leaders were making. The incidents called into question Iraq’s ability to effectively buffer and contain the Islamic State militant group and raised doubts about the country’s political stability 13 years after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. w vid Port call refusal could signal more trouble in the South China Sea
by Kirk Spitzer - USA TODAY

TOKYO - China’s surprise rejection of a port visit by a U.S. aircraft carrier last week could signal a further escalation of tensions in the disputed South China Sea. Chinese authorities refused last week to grant permission for the USS John C. Stennis battle group to make a routine port call at Hong Kong. It is the first time in nearly a decade that China has turned away a U.S. carrier. The move came just two weeks after Defense Secretary Ashton Carter used a high-profile visit to the Stennis to criticize China’s territorial claims and island-building campaign in the South China Sea, a critical waterway that supports $5 trillion a year in international trade. China has claimed sovereignty over virtually all of the South China Sea and has built a string of landfill islands with military-grade runways and port facilities to bolster its position. The refusal to host the Stennis battle group was a direct response — and challenge — to Carter’s visit, said Grant Newsham, senior research fellow at the Japan Forum for Strategic Studies in Tokyo. West Side Story bailout ...
Puerto Rico’s financial crisis puts the squeeze on Congress
Potential default of $422M looms Monday
by Nathan Bomey - USA TODAY

The confrontation between debt-swamped Puerto Rico and its creditors is intensifying as the U.S. territory will default on payments due Monday, deepening the island’s financial crisis and placing additional pressure on Congress to intervene. The debt crisis threatens to resuscitate moribund ideological debates over the propriety of federal bailouts and the impact of fiscal mismanagement on the lives of real people faced with insufficient services. Puerto Rico Gov. Alejandro García Padilla said Sunday in a televised address that he had ordered the island’s Government Development Bank not to make certain payments owed Monday, stacking another round of missed payments on previous defaults. “This was a painful decision. We would have preferred to have had a legal framework to restructure our debts in an orderly manner,” García Padilla said. “But faced with the inability to meet the demands of our creditors and the needs of our people, I had to make a choice. I decided that essential services for the 3.5 million American citizens in Puerto Rico came first.” Puerto Rico was expected to default on about $422 million in bonds Monday, plunging the U.S. territory deeper into arrears, Moody’s Investor Service said last week in a report.

FINAL BOW: ELEPHANT ACT ENDS AFTER 145 YEARS
by Katharine Lackey - USA TODAY

“The Greatest Show on Earth” said a final farewell to the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus elephants Sunday night marking the end of an era that lasted nearly a century and a half. Animal rights activists had protested the act for decades claiming cruel training and housing. The 11 pachyderms are retiring to Ringling’s 200-acre Center for Elephant Conservation in central Florida, where they will join 29 others. [...]

Schools out forever ...
w vid Detroit teacher sick-out closes nearly all schools
by Lori Higgins and Keith Matheny - Detroit Free Press

DETROIT - A mass of teacher sick-outs has shut down 94 schools in Detroit Public Schools on Monday, as teachers protest the news Saturday that the district won't be able to pay them past June 30. The district enrolls about 46,000 students in 97 schools. The Detroit Federation of Teachers on Sunday called for the mass sick-out of the district's 2,600 teachers. Judge Steven Rhodes, the district's emergency manager, told the union Saturday that unless the Michigan Legislature approves sending more money to the district, there is not enough in the coffers to pay teachers their already-earned salaries after June 30. Summer school and extended special education services also would be canceled. [...]

Trump vs Indiana Cruz and the Election of Doom !!!

Amazing deja vu doo as Cruz is not eligible ...
w vid (10:02) - Cruz says Indiana will decide GOP race
by Fox News

adds Trump is 'one of greatest frauds in modern electoral history'
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz declared Friday that the 2016 race for the Republican presidential nomination
will be decided next week in Indiana – making clear he's staking his underdog bid on a strong performance there.

“It gives me great comfort that this primary is going to be decided by the Midwestern common sense of the Hoosier State,”
Cruz said during a one-hour Fox News-hosted town hall in downtown Indianapolis.

Cruz, speaking with anchor Sean Hannity, did not say definitively whether he would drop out
if he loses Indiana on Tuesday, but described the "heartland" state as critical.

Cruz trails front-runner Donald Trump by hundreds of delegates.
Currently, the delegate count has Trump leading with 994, Cruz in second with 566 and Ohio Gov. John Kasich in third with 153.
Cruz, at this point, cannot reach the requisite 1,237 delegates to clinch the nomination before the July convention.

But Cruz said, “Here’s the simple reality – I believe nobody is going to get to 1,237.”

Cruz told the crowd Trump is one of the “greatest frauds in modern electoral history”
and is “pretending to be an outsider.”

Cruz also fired back at comments former House Speaker John Boehner made earlier
this week referring to Cruz as “Lucifer in the flesh” and a “miserable son of a b----.”

“Those comments reveal everything you need to know about Washington,”
Cruz said. “Listen, we don’t have two parties in Washington.
We have one corrupt bipartisan mess in Washington.”

Cruz called Boehner’s comments “striking,” adding the former house speaker was “letting out his inner-Trump.”

“He praised Hillary Clinton and he praised Donald Trump. He said, Donald is my friend, we go texting,
we go golfing, he’s my buddy,” Cruz said.

He added, “I don’t know Boehner. I don’t think we’ve said 50 words to each other in our lives.”

Cruz gave “credit” Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, saying
“he is an honest socialist. He actually says what he believes.”

Former HP businesswoman Carly Fiorina, whom Cruz tapped earlier this week to be his running mate,
also joined him at the event. Fiorina had been a GOP White House contender before dropping out of the race.

Fiorina kept up the attack on Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton, and Trump.

“Donald Trump’s contributed seven times to Hillary Clinton,” Fiorina said.
“I’m sorry, it is not a choice or a contrast when Donald Trump agrees with Hillary Clinton on so many positions.”

Fiorina said that both Trump and Clinton are both “the ultimate insiders.”

“When Ted Cruz is the president of the United States, I suspect Hillary Clinton will be prosecuted.”

She added, “How long have Republicans and conservatives said we can only win by presenting a clear contrast,
so here it is – people of Indiana, Cruz-Fiorina, Trump-Clinton.”

At a separate address in California, though, Trump mocked Cruz's decision to announce Fiorina as his running mate.
"I like Carly, but when she left she had no votes," he said.

Speaking to California Republicans, Trump said of Cruz: "He has no path to victory."

Okoboji Classic Cars -The Ultimate Man Cave

Lake Okoboji is a popular vacation and recreation spot in northwest Iowa, including an amusement park named Arnold’s Park. It has an array of beautiful old cars in it, along with recreations of storefronts much the way Arnold’s Park looked in the ‘50s and ‘60s. The  Roof Garden was a well-known dance hall, drawing people from long distances to dance to big-name rock & roll bands.
