"It is Congress’s responsibility to support our troops and ensure our armed forces have the proper training, equipment, and funding to protect us from enemies at home and abroad.

I am grateful for the sacrifices made by our veterans and by the men and women who currently serve in our armed forces. I believe it is important service members, veterans, and their families receive the appropriate support and care both during and after their service.

In 2014, reports of misconduct of certain Veterans Affairs facilities revealed systemic issues of mismanagement within the VA healthcare system. Congress passed and the President signed into law reforms to provide access to care for our veterans. The Veterans Access to Care Act requires, for two years, the agency to offer non-VA care to any enrolled veteran who cannot get an appointment within 14 days or who lives more than 40 miles from a VA medical center. While these reforms are appropriate and past due, it is a shame it took the deaths of veterans for these changes to occur. Congress must continue to conduct oversight on the VA to ensure our veterans are receiving the care they deserve.”
